Corbishley Resigns As Police Commissioner
[Updated: The Governor has now confirmed that Stephen Corbishley has tendered his resignation with immediate effect]
While it is not yet officially confirmed, there are suggestions that Stephen Corbishley has resigned as Police Commissioner, and this morning he changed his bio on his Facebook page to say “Former Commissioner of the BPS.”
Mr Corbishley previously served with Kent Police in the UK, was appointed as Bermuda’s Police Commissioner in May 2018. Bernews has asked for official comment and will update as able.
Update 10.55am: Governor Rena Lalgie said, “Commissioner of Police Mr. Stephen Corbishley has tendered his resignation, which I have accepted with immediate effect. I wish Mr. Corbishley well in his future career.
“An open, merit based and fair process will commence as soon as possible to recruit the next Commissioner of Police. In the intervening period, I will be appointing Mr Darrin Simons as Acting Commissioner and Superintendent Na’imah Astwood as Acting Deputy Commissioner.
“I have had the pleasure of meeting men and women within the Bermuda Police Service who are dedicated professionals, committed to meeting the highest policing standards and are passionate about serving the people of Bermuda. I am extremely grateful to those who step forward to do what is, at the best of times, a difficult job and is even more so in this unprecedented period.”

Update 6.31pm: Following today’s resignation announcement of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Stephen Corbishley, the Minister of National Security, Renee Ming said: “I wish to offer my thanks and appreciation to Mr. Stephen Corbishley for his service these past three years as Bermuda’s Commissioner of Police. As the Minister of National Security, I’ve worked alongside Mr. Corbishley during some very critical moments for our country, including serious crime incidents and of course the current pandemic.
“And as the co-chair of the Emergency Measures Organisation [EMO] we’ve worked to ensure an effective, coordinated hurricane and disaster response so that our community could feel safe and secure during times of uncertainty.
“On behalf of the Ministry of National Security, I want to take this opportunity to wish Mr. Corbishley the best on his future endeavours.”
Update 8.17pm: A police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service wishes to thank former Commissioner Corbishley for his service. We also assure the public that the BPS continues to achieve its mission of Making Bermuda Safer, under the guidance of Acting Commissioner, Darrin Simons and his leadership team.
“There will not be any disruption in service to the community, while we await the appoint of the next commissioner.”
wonder if the investigation into the 800k entertainer is still going to continue
The voter should have forgotten about that by now and all the the other crap that has been going on.
if it was the opposition there would be strikes marches and the likes, bunch of hypocrites.
Bit coin will get it back im sure
As we just sit by and act like we are not out $200 million from Morgan’s point. Sure, let’s get to the bottom of the 800k. But let’s not call anyone a hypocrite when you are not shouting from the mountain top for accountability for Carolina Bay, it just makes you sound and look like ‘something else’
And the bermudiana on south shore? The current govt list is endless.
Happy weekend
This should come as no surprise to the majority of the community, because there is been a lot of speculations lately and when the Commissioner went missing for a period of time, it just about showed what was happening and confirmed many rumors already been stated throughout the community.
Regardless let’s be appreciative of the service that the Commissioner has given to Bermuda and looking forward to the next Commissioner be in a position to offer even a greater service to our Island Home that is in desperate need of true leadership in key roles, something that is seriously missing of late and has been for some time, all the best to you Commissioner as you take on the next Journey of your life.
and the FACTS of which are WHAT?????
Is it because he did not take the vax?
Thank You Mr. Stephen Corbishley for ALL that You have done for Bermuda!!!
this is very alarming though
Bermuda does one of two things,
it will grow on you or
tear you apart!
He did the right thing.
This does not surprise me. He is not the first resignation by a principal in Government or quango. The PLP does not let people do what they are hired to do. All must do as the PLP deems, a Government that sticks its nose into and wanting to take control of every area whether it is in its remit or expertise, like control freaks it is.
HE HAS HAD ENOUGH.
The Governor, which is the representative of the Queen, is in charge of the police. Our government has no say in those affairs.
Hopefully you held the same beliefs over the infamous pepper spraying incident when it happened.
It is his choice to resign . It has nothing to do with the Queen …this government pokes their nose into almost everything even if it is running smoothly . The old saying ” Don’t fix what is not broke ” comes to mind !!
he has been a great asset to Bermuda .
And what sinking boat in coot pond do you live on idiot.
Thank goodness.
“Our government has no say in those affairs.”
Yea, right. Tell that to former Police Commissioner Colin Coxall!
Correct – check me out on Facebook for answwers
He did not resign.
Thank you Mr. Corbishley for your service to us. All the best in your next assignment.
Free from the back stabbers.
I’m sorry that Mr C is leaving the Police, as I thought that he was doing a good job. However, I do have to wonder (as I do when any Commissioner leaves at comparatively short notice) “Did he jump or was he pushed?”
We all remember what happened to the AG when he asked a few questions?
I hope there’s nothing more behind this than his desire to just move on And because of you his family. We have all witnessed what happened to a few that were in charge of education system. They were hired to do a job as a professional…. And then we’re told what they were hired to do by politicians. How did that work out? Same thing is happened at the gaming commission. And walk to politician that didn’t like someone…. The head of that department is pushed out. The end result is that for the better part of 4+ years we have had a department that probably budgets for a few million dollars staff by a bunch of people and rent space in Hamilton. That department has accomplished zero. Meanwhile it’s costing us how much?
But as we all seen that this government is more concerned in putting in the people that they want, not making them accountable to anyone or for anything, forking out lots of money…. and raising the taxes to pay for it. So what do you expect.
Pushed out by the snakes and backstabbers within his own organization anyone who tries to bring a level of professionalism and accountability is undermined at every term. First Ms. Murray now the COP, those not part of the right fraternity or clique need not apply or they’ll be driven out too.
This will be a loss for Bermuda. I am sad to hear this.
The best we have had in a while.
Best wishes, Sir.
Comfortably the best Commissioner that I have seen, grateful for all he did.
I hope it stops xenophobic anti-expat nonsense on his replacement. If the best candidate is British, American or Senegalese – who cares. This is in some ways an impossible job, it needs the very best.
Another sad chapter in the history of the Service.
Too many promoted beyond their abilities.
Too many ex-pats that stabbed locals in their backs.
Daniels should have been promoted years ago to this position.
BIU/PLP 1.
Bermuda 0.
with a name like ‘puzzled’
nuff said.
Thanks moron.
Thats why your a boston whaler and not a ship like me.
ghost ship
You are delusional.
The automatic “What a great Commissioner he was” is to be expected from this group. If he was that great, a Bermudian would be ready to step into his shoes in short order. Let’s hold our breath on three…..1..2..
Lmao expats stabbing locals in the back. The entire senior management team Supt and above is Bermudian. So are they the ones who have been promoted above their level? 3 high ranking British cops have visited our shores in Armes, Murray and now Corbishley all have been forced out by the back biting and bitter anti expat sentiment from a section of the service that will fight against any effort to professionalize the service and hold people to account. Talk about not having a clue what you are talking about.
Not too surprising. Amazing he lasted this long. Not a friendly place for expats from the commonwealth in spite of good intentions.
One would argue it’s a friendlier place for expats than the Bermudian..
True, but it would be a bad argument.
Truth is stranger than fiction.
I don’t know who to believe the people who are said he is leaving them or the others who was possibly glad to leave him.
Seemed like a very nice guy,
His wounds are self-inflicted and actually none of anyone business. Those who know, know the truth.
This had nothing to do with the Governor or Government of the day. He needs to return home and manage is personal affairs!
How dare you change the narrative, it was his own faults? No way! We are sticking with blaming The Government and Bermudians!
While it may be his personal affairs or not does not take away from the fact that this government wants to control everything in this country whether it is running smoothly or not and that will only drive most of the professionals doing a great job and with a good plan to give up and leave !
Happy wife mediocre life! When the boss speaks you listen and jump! Case closed!
Government does not control the police service, but there are clearly ways to get around that. The new Commissioner will either be a lackey and do what Government wants, and Bermuda will become more of a police state, or will have the same treatment, and the same result.
