Plan To Rename Corkscrew Hill & Stadium
[Updated] The Ministry of Public Works intends to rename Corkscrew Hill in Devonshire to Flora Duffy Hill, in recognition of her historic achievement in winning Bermuda’s first ever Olympic gold medal.
A Government spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Public Works announced today that it intends to rename Corkscrew Hill in Devonshire to Flora Duffy Hill.
“The renaming of this landmark road is part of a special recognition for Bermuda’s first ever Olympic Gold Medalist, Flora Duffy.
“The name change is in accordance with the Road Renaming Notice under Sections 15 & 16 of the Public Lands Act 1984.
“Tomorrow [October 4] the notice will be Officially Gazetted. The Ministry advised that if anyone has any objections to the proposal, they must submit it in writing to the Minister of Public Works, 3rd Floor, General Post Office Building, Church Street, Hamilton by November 4, 2021.”
Update 8.45pm: We have an additional statement in providing details of the events to celebrate Flora Duffy Day, and it noted that National Sports Centre’s South Field Stadium will be renamed the Flora Duffy Stadium. You can read that in full here.
I recognise Flora’s tremendous achievement in winning an Olympic gold medal but isn’t a national holiday in her name enough recognition? It would be a real shame to lose Corkscrew Hill. The name is as characterful and quirky as the hill itself. The creative and unique names of many of Bermuda’s roads and byways are intrinsic to Bermuda’s charm and often speak to its history and character. This is part of our appeal for tourists. Isn’t there a sports facility we could name after her instead? Leave corkscrew hill be.
I totally agree – corkscrew hill is one of our most uniquely named roads. Leave it alone!
I agree with Daniel’s sentiments. A sports facility would be more appropriate, since we are celebrating an athlete.
No bigger facility than the Stadium, which is being done.
I love Flora and her achievements, but I think Corkscrew Hill should keep its unique, colourful and timeless name. Surely renaming that massive stadium is enough.
If the Govt. says left a group always says right. We simply cannot win… ever. Put these people on a Committee to do the work and they never report. What a nightmare. Yes. Change Corkscrew Hill. As simple as that.
Court Street should be Clarence Hill Street.
I think they should extend it and go straight from Corkscrew to Trimingham! And rename It from Trimingham to Clarence Hill!
Someone did say that Bermuda tends to be a country of “No!”, and we see it here yet again.
Funny though that there wasn’t outrage after renaming of a city park after someone who’s never even lived here.
What a nice idea!
Better the rename the street of her residence Flora Duffy Street/Road/Lane whichever it is.
If this Hill is so iconic why do people throw so much trash on the side of the road?
Instead of writing your objections on this media, do something constructive and write them to the Minister of Public Works.
Great idea to honour one of Bermuda’s greatest sports people.
Of course, being Bermuda people will still call it Corkscrew Hill. Just like people give directions based on a tree that below over 25 years ago!
Maybe it’ll be just part of local vernacular. For example, “S-Hill” isn’t an official name but most locals know what’s being referred to.
I think renaming East Broadway to Flora Duffy Way would be nicer. Im kind of offended that they chose a short hill to name her after.
The additional name change of trimingham hill to Clarence Hill is brilliant.
Renaming court street to clarence hill street is again offensive imo.
You’re forgetting that East Broadway (the 2 lane section) is affectionately known as “Tessie’s Turnpike “, after Tessie Terceira. When Flora won so decisively in 2018, my wife & I were spectating from the upper part of Corkscrew Hill. Watching Flora eat up that challenging hill, leaving her competitors behind, was magnificent. For me, those images are indelible, & it makes perfect sense to name the hill after our Olympic gold medalist.
Nice to see someone finally referring to it by its correct (nick)name.
For some reason it was erroneously dubbed ‘Tessie’s Highway’ even before his book came out .
It got the moniker ‘Tessie’s Turnpike’ from his colleagues in the house even before the project was started.
It’s actually “Tessie’s Highway “
