Restaurant Weeks Review: Sul Verde

A cold January night calls for comfort food, Italian style. Thankfully, Restaurant Weeks is on and Sul Verde has an excellent menu filled with comfort food.

I went to Sul Verde over the weekend with a friend and we happily settled into the cozy restaurant after a whole day of wind and rain. We were quickly seated by Marco and offered menus.

The menu was similar to Island Brasserie in that instead of a whole new menu, diners could sample menu staples for a much lower price point.

After ordering a glass of bubbly, we decided to share appetizers: Calamari Fritti and Zucchini Parmigiana. The calamari was crispy, not greasy and seasoned very simply. It came along with a spicy marina sauce that was a great complement.

The Zucchini Parmigiana was comfort in a bowl – zesty, cheesy and yet still light thanks to the zucchini. It’s one of my favorite dishes at Sul Verde and I hope they never take it off the menu. Our appetizers were an excellent start to the meal.

For mains, I went a bit simple and ordered Campamelle [a bell shaped pasta] with Sul Verde’s signature prime beef meatballs with Montepulciano Sauce and parmigiano. I’ve never had proper Italian meatballs because I stopped eating beef years ago. But I couldn’t resist ordering them.

The meatballs were huge but so soft and full of flavor. The incredible sauce was soaked up by the pasta and the aged parmigiano rounded out the whole dish. This was exactly what I needed to eat on a cold January night and I highly recommend trying this dish if you haven’t already – a flavorful, rich sauce, perfect al dente pasta and beautiful meatballs.

For dessert, I went classic with Tiramisu. Sul Verde has one of the best I’ve tasted and I wasn’t disappointed. It was creamy and decadent while still being light and not overly sweet.

To finish the dinner, we enjoyed a glass of orangecillo, very similar to the traditional limoncello but house made with oranges instead of lemons. It was a wonderful way to end the meal.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this dinner. It was delicious Italian comfort food at its finest. I always njoy Sul Verde and this time was no different. I highly recommend checking out this menu before Restaurant Weeks end of February 11.

*Sul Verde is in the $52 category.
