Audio | Cannonier: ‘This Was An Impactful Blow’
“If the Premier doesn’t give any answers, I’m going to say this here, because none of my colleagues are willing to say it, the Premier needs to resign, because more stuff is going to come out,” OBA MP Craig Cannonier said.
Speaking in the House of Assembly on Friday, Mr Cannonier said. “This was an impactful blow to Bermuda, because at the time of budget we were all looking for hope and we were expecting to hear from the the Finance Minister something that would give us, just a peak at being able to hold onto something, that we were going to make it through.”
“When that resignation came, our Government got a glimpse of how much everyone was behind the PLP’s former Finance Minister,” he added. “So excuse us for having questions about why, at the eve of a budget, this happened.”
Mr Cannonier said, “I’ve been saying it over and over and over, Premier, so that people don’t speculate, give some answers, so they don’t speculate.
“Now the OBA had his resignations….I was one of them, but we got a sling of them,” Mr Cannonier said. “We have got Ministers resigning, one after the other, the other, there is even some Senators resigning.
“So, what is the Premier not doing, or what is he doing to prevent this? I’m concerned, everybody else on the street is talking, and concerned. Something needs to happen here.
“Then you have a former Premier of the PLP saying that the depth of the PLP…”Oh, the Premier’s not going to have any problems filling all of those positions that should become available, he has got a wealth of intellectual capital within the PLP.”
“But yet, two, three days later, he makes himself a Finance Minister,” Mr Cannonier said.
“Something needs to happen. If the Premier doesn’t give any answers, I’m going to say this here, because none of my colleagues are willing to say it. The Premier needs to resign, because more stuff is going to come out,” Mr Cannonier said, just as his 20-minute time allocation was concluding.
The text above represents only a small portion of Mr Cannonier’s comments, for full context please listen to his full 19-minute speech during the Motion to Adjourn on Friday, where multiple MPs spoke, we will continue to post audio, and you can access more audio of their comments here.
I think the premiere forgets who pays his wage. He works for the people and the people deserve answers. Why the big secret as to why Mr. Dickinson resigned. What is he hiding from the people…we deserve answers or move out.
Thank you Mr. Cannonier for saying what a lot of us are thinking. At least you are frank and honest.
And no I do not want to hear any Jetgate comments from the peanut gallery.
Totally agree with you Mr Cannonier. Priemier Burt needs to resign. Although we are still wondering why you resigned.
Craig Cannonier is 100% correct, I am also on record with saying, he should have never resigned as premier, and I said that because first off, he did nothing wrong, and secondly, the moment he did that, was the last day the OBA had a chance of staying in power..
Because of the foolish mistake Craig made with resigning, I no longer live in Bermuda, I started making my plans to exit the moment he stepped down, and I have to say, I love my life where I am today, but Bermuda is paying a huge price for it in many other ways..
Mr. Cannonier I couldn’t agree with you more in respect to the Premier resigning, my issue is why haven’t you or any of your colleagues put a vote of no confidence on the floor of the house, because it’s seems all of you politicians are nothing but hot air when it comes to challenging the removal of this Premier.
I don’t think a vote of no confidence will go anywhere. 6 OBA will vote in support and 30 PLP against. No PLP backbench MP is going to risk losing their well paid to do nothing job, and incapable of finding a replacement paycheck. At least back in the better days there were always some backbenchers prepared to vote their conscience, but Dr Brown took care of that with his increase in MPs pay.
Agree. Risky move too, Burt survives comfortably and is then emboldened to be an even bigger twat than he already is.
Can’t trust that guy at the top right now either. Too many hidden agendas and secrecy. Everything a man hides will find it’s way to the light. “Pride is before a crash”. As written by an ancient proverb. Just give it time. HINT: some people are just cocky and willfully blind. So- in-so will eventually learn to do the PEOPLES Business or be out! Like they say in Bermuda, “Always De Hard Way” NO CONFIDENCE!!
