Target For Balanced Budget Delayed By Year

February 24, 2022

Premier and Minister of Finance David Burt “signaled that the new target for achieving a balanced budget has now been delayed by one year to fiscal year 2024/25,” the Government said this evening.

The Premier said, “In the last budget presentation, the Government was projected to balance the budget by the next fiscal year, 2023/24. However, people still need help and our most vulnerable will continue to need support

“We will also continue to implement the Government’s Economic Recovery Plan, reform Bermuda’s healthcare and education systems, and fund necessary capital investments to replace and repair ageing infrastructure; all of which means that meeting this target will not possible in the next fiscal year.”

The spokesperson added, “The Statement in support of the Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure for the Fiscal Year 2022/23 will be made tomorrow, 25th February with proceedings starting at 10.00 am. Following the Statement the budget will be available at  www.gov.bm/budget.”

Bernews will be providing live coverage of the 2022 Budget.

    Kicking the can down the road, is that 20 years now? Sooner rather than later this house of cards will come crashing down and it will unfortunately be the PLP voters that bear the brunt of this disaster.

    I truly hope Burt and his colleagues have a plan B for their voters. And Burtcoin isn’t the answer. Bermuda’s needs strong leadership not cowardice at this critical time.

    Are we surprised
    we need a team who can build our economy build unity and build confidence
    we also need to say thank you and good bye to this government
    plp = 30-6 and 3 + Billion in debt

    Cut Government expenditure by $40m and no need to borrow. Stop the defined benefit pension plan and replace with contributory. Nothing will ever happen because it is an employment agency, paying top pay and benefits, supported by debt.
    A balanced budget of course will not include the sinking fund contribution so there will still be deficit budgets going forward.
