“This week we profile Mrs. Gina Blakeney Smith, Bermuda’s first credentialed female actuary and Bermuda’s first credentialed Black actuary.

“As we read in Mrs. Florenz Maxwell’s novel GirlCott, the main character, Desma has a plan that after completing secondary school she will be studying to become an actuary. Mrs. Blakeney Smith has shared with us a warm, motivating and enlightening discourse of her path to personal becoming.

“Other GirlCott activities this week will be a Math Cryptogram to solve and a Math activity where we reflect on both the 1959 Sterling monetary system as well as an exercise in converting from pounds, shillings and pence to the dollars and cents that we have used since 1970. Comparing those prices to today’s prices should be entertaining.

“Later in the week we will be asking both young and older readers of GirlCott to share with us “Caught Reading’ pictures and we will leave some discussion points for both families for the weekend.”
