Conyers Celebrates 30 Years Of Supporting Youth
Conyers and the Conyers Charitable Trust noted they have contributed to the education and well-being of Bermudian youth over the past 30 years, offering scholarships, paid summer internships and more.
“Giving back to the community is at the core of who we are as a firm, which is why we support charities and initiatives that enrich the lives of children and youth, especially those in at-risk groups,” said Lisa Spencer-Arscott, Global Head of Human Resources.
“Charitable giving at Conyers consists of two distinct pillars: the Conyers Charitable Trust, which focuses on supporting youth development and education, and our employee charitable program, which matches employee donations to grass-roots community organisations across Bermuda.
“At the heart of Conyers Charitable Trust, and the work that it does, are its two signature programs, Legal Education Scholarship and Local Community Giving.
“Through our Legal Education Scholarship we have donated over $2 million in the past ten years and have been providing scholarships to students for over 30 years. In addition, we’ve offered many paid summer internships to our aspiring lawyers, with the sole aim of supporting their hands-on work experience.
“Through our Local Community Giving program, the Trust invests in a number of local partnerships and non-profit organizations, donating more than $7.6 million since the beginning. In addition to donations, we’ve shared our professional skills and expertise with nonprofits, participated in donation drives, mentored kids, and much more.
“One recent example was sharing the gift of reading with the youngest students in our community through a donation to Purvis Primary School. The donation was used to purchase books in honour of World Book Day in March. As part of the initiative, Corporate Services Manager Laura Hill read some of her favourite stories to Primary 1-3 students.
“The Conyers Charitable Trust also sponsors the Gap Year Internship Programme, which enables young people to take a ‘Gap Year’ at Conyers and get real, on-the-job experience as part of a paid internship. Our client and business services teams give their time and talents to make sure each intern has a great job experience, and one that will hopefully open new doors and change their lives for the better. This year the Conyers Charitable Trust sponsored five student interns.
“Conyers also runs a long-standing employee charitable giving programme. Employees who take part in the programme donate money from their salaries each month and the total is matched by the firm. Since its inception more than 15 years ago, the programme has raised more than $350,000 for local causes.
“Through these different community service initiatives, the firm and its employees have supported the important work of many youth-focused charities in Bermuda. Our involvement includes volunteering at events and serving on the boards of charitable organisations. Here is a partial list of groups we are proud to support:
- Big Brothers Big Sisters Bermuda
- Bermuda Education Network
- Future Leaders Bermuda
- Each One Reach One Back to School campaign
- Bermuda Sloop Foundation”
