May 30, 2022

Dozens of old Bermuda banknotes — including some dating back to the 1950s — will be auctioned at Noonan’s Auctioneers in the UK this week as part of the Platinum Jubilee Banknote auction, which features banknotes that the Queen appears on.

The Queen is listed in the Guinness World Records in regards to the “most currencies featuring the same individual,” with Guinness noting that the image of Queen Elizabeth II “appears on the coinage of at least 35 different countries.”

The auction listings [PDF] show dozens of Bermuda banknotes for auction ranging from five and ten shilling notes from the 1950s, one and ten pound notes from the 1960s, and various dollar denominations from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s.

“Five shillings, which is the equivalent of 25p, is worth about £5 in today’s money, according to the Bank of England. The note was issued more than eight months after King George VI’s death and Queen Elizabeth II’s ascension to the throne.

“This example is just one of 500 historic banknotes, all featuring a portrait of the Queen, that are set to go under the hammer at Noonan’s Auctioneers in Mayfair, central London on Tuesday,” the Mail reported.
