Dame Marjorie Bean Bermuda May 2022The Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy will host a creative hat day to raise funds for the island’s special needs community.

The Devonshire-based facility will celebrate the birthday of Dame Marjorie Bean on Wednesday [May 25].

People are encouraged to wear their favourite hat or create their own for the “Let’s have a $2 hat day” event on Old Military Road.

All proceeds will go to The Friends of Hope Academy, which supports children at the Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy and the wider special needs community.

The Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy is the only school in the Bermuda education system that services students with multiple learning disabilities and complex care needs.

Dame Marjorie Bean began her career in education by teaching English and geography at the Berkeley Institute.

She became the first Black person to be appointed to an administrative position in Bermuda’s Department of Education in 1948 when she took on the job of supervisor of schools.

In 1968, she was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire [MBE], recognising the significant contribution she made to education in Bermuda.

She was later advanced to Officer [OBE] in 1981 and lastly Dame [DBE] in 1995. She died aged 91 in 2001.
