$3,398 Raised To Enhance Westgate Library
A recent campaign by the Personal Empowerment Circle aiming to raise funds to enhance the Westgate library and related programs has received a total of $3,398 in gift certificates.
A spokesperson said, “The seven volunteers supporting the Personal Empowerment Circle, a program geared to facilitate the transformation of those incarcerated at Westgate, wish to thank all of those across the island who contributed to a recent campaign. This initiative invited donations to enhance the Westgate library and related programs, thus promoting the potential personal development of inmates.
“The drive received a total of $3,398 in gift certificates at four outlets – including Bermuda Book Store, Brown & Co., Griot, and Long Story Short. In addition, a few dozen out-of-print local and technical books were received at Mirrors’ office for use at the facility.
“These contributions have come from diverse sources; amounts ranging from a few dollars to much more. There were donations from the business and union sectors, demonstrating broad support for those incarcerated to be able to optimize their potential.
“In a gesture reflecting the growing awareness of the importance of this type of initiative to our whole society, one of the outlets – Brown & Co’s Book Mart – has upped the ante of the previously agreed offer of 5% off on the donations, up to 20% off on any in-stock materials.
“Also donated were 20 copies of The Master Plan by author Chris Wilson, who served a prolonged period of incarceration in the U.S., but who was able to transform his life. The books were gifted to the 18 participants of a parenting course organized for inmates at Westgate by Mirrors, with the extra two being donated to the library.”
