US Sailing Asked To Review Fatal Incident
Following the death of one of the sailors in the race, the Newport Bermuda Race organisers said that they reached out to US Sailing and “encouraged the appointment of an independent panel to review what happened and publish a report.”
This follows after captain Colin Golder of the 42-foot sloop Morgan of Marietta tragically died after going overboard in strong winds approximately 325 miles from Bermuda.
A spokesperson said, “Since the tragic loss of Colin Golder on Sunday and our statement that evening, the ensign at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club has flown at half mast and been solemnly observed by members and visiting sailors at colours each evening.
“The Bermuda Race Organizing Committee has stayed in contact with Mr. Golder’s family and the crew of the 42-foot Morgan of Marietta, which has returned safely to the mainland.
“During this time, we have reached out to the leadership of US Sailing, the national governing body for the sport in the U.S., and encouraged the appointment of an independent panel to review what happened and publish a report to help all sailors learn from the loss of Mr. Golder. US Sailing will announce the appointment of a panel in due course.
“While words are inadequate at a time like this, we extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Golder’s family, friends, and crew as we await the report of the US Sailing panel.”
