A unique insight into life on board a Clipper 70 will be available this week as part of free tours of the 70-foot racing yacht.

Members of the public can explore the stripped-out ocean racing yacht in a virtual tour on Thursday [June 17], while in-person tours will take place from Wednesday [June 15] to Friday [June 17].

The above and below-deck tours will provide a taste of the living conditions and explore various areas of the yacht.

The hour-long virtual tour at 10 am will delve into the Dare to Lead team yacht, skippered by Nigel Parry, and feature several crew members, including the first mate.

Laura Ayres, the Clipper Race head of partnerships, said the all-access tour will allow people to “meet the characters and hear their stories from the ocean race.”

She said: “It’s a great opportunity for those who can’t be in Bermuda to engage with the race and understand a little more about it.”

The physical tours run from 1 pm to 7 pm each day and allow people to get a “touch, feel and smell of the yachts” and experience the confined living spaces of Clipper Race winner Visit Sanya, China on Wednesday, WTC Logistics on Thursday and Qingdao on Friday. All boats are at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.

Groups of 20 to 40 pupils, aged from 6 to 15, from 18 local schools will also take part in the physical tours of the Clipper 70.

Ms Ayres added: “It’s all about inspiring the next generation and showing the Clipper Race is about everyday people doing extraordinary things.

“Hopefully, these tours can inspire children to think, ‘one day this could be me’, or at least get on the water and be more active.

“We’re keen to make people aware that sailing isn’t necessarily an elitist sport. We want to see people engage with the water, particularly on an island nation like Bermuda.”
