July 12, 2022

UWC Bermuda July 2022 (1)Bermuda National Committee for the United World Colleges [UWC] announced that Berkeley Institute student Chloe Morton has been awarded placement for the 2 year programme at UWC Mahindra College in India.

A spokesperson said, “UWC Mahindra is located on a 175 acre campus 40 km west of Pune in Maharashtra, India.

“The College offers a two-year International Baccalaureate [IB] programme to approximately 250 full-time boarders and is one of 18 UWC locations globally, with students representing over 80 nationalities. UWC Mahindra has previously welcomed several Bermudian students, including UWC Selections Chair Zayna Foggo [’01]”

About her selection, Ms. Morton said, “It was mind blowing to be selected. I’m so excited to have this once in a lifetime experience in India.

“I wanted to find something different, a change, and I found it. With this, I will be able to see the world in a different way, a whole new light. It’s exciting, but I’m nervous at the same time. I know this is going to change my life.”

Zayna Foggo, Head of Selections for the UWC Bermuda National Committee said, “Chloe demonstrated strong academic ability, a genuine commitment to her community and reflects core UWC ideals.

“We are excited to see students of Chloe’s caliber applying for this exceptional programme and are pleased to offer her what will undoubtedly be a life-changing experience in India. We know she will represent herself and Bermuda well.”

Sean Smatt, Chairman of the National Committee added, “I would like to add my sincere congratulations to Chloe on her achievement.

“A UWC education is like nothing else currently available to Bermudian students. It represents an amazing opportunity to explore the world and the cultures within it, while following a challenging IB academic curriculum. Additionally, the UWC movement is partnered with a variety of scholarship programs to help fund university education. It really is an exceptional opportunity for Bermudian students.”

A spokesperson added, “Students selected by the UWC Bermuda National Committee [registered Charity #346] are offered the opportunity to complete a two year IB curriculum at one of 18 UWC locations including Norway, India, Costa Rica, Wales, The Netherlands and Singapore. Students are selected on a need-blind basis, with financial support provided based on need.

“The UWC movement was conceived in the 1950s, based on the idea that students aged 16-18 would be grounded in their culture, but impressionable enough to learn from each other.

“UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. This is accomplished by providing an international education and exposure founded on a combination of rigorous academics, cultural exchange, tolerance and community service.

“Eligible students are encouraged to learn about the UWC movement and the application process at www.bm.uwc.org and may contact the UWC Bermuda National Committee at info@bm.uwc.org . Student scholarships and bursaries granted by the UWC Bermuda National Committee are funded entirely by local donors.
