August 22, 2022

The Foundation for Bermuda Studies announced that they will be awarding recipients of the Spice Valley/T.N. Tatem Middle School Trust – Quinton Edness and Naquita Dill-Robinson Scholarships.

A spokesperson said, “These scholarships were formed to recognize and support students who achieved academic honours while attending the Spice Valley/ T.N.Tatem Middle School. Additionally, each recipient must complete secondary school [or the equivalent] and have completed the first academic term of full-time attendance at an accredited post-secondary institution offering either a degree, diploma or certificate upon completion.

“This year, the Foundation will award approximately $56,500.00 to students who have qualified as recipients of the scholarships.

Background

“The Bermuda Charitable Trust, originally known as the Spice Valley Middle School Trust, was established by the late Honourable Quinton Edness C.B.E, J.P., M.P. in 1998 to provide funds for a broad range of charitable and educational purposes. Mr Edness, Bermuda’s first black radio broadcaster, held various Government portfolios, including Minister of Works and Housing, Minister of Health and Social Services, and Minister of Community Affairs. He was dedicated to education and the development of Bermuda’s youth, making considerable contributions to the fund during his lifetime to give access to Bermudian students from all walks of life.

“Pursuant to the Charities Act 1978, the Trust was registered as a Charitable Organization in May 2003, with the school’s renaming in 2006 to the Spice Valley/T.N. Tatem Middle School Trust. When the school was closed permanently in 2020, the fund was transferred to the Foundation of Bermuda Studies, which is charged with upholding the original Trust’s charitable purpose.

“The Foundation, created in 2003 by Mrs Lynda Milligan-Whyte, Mr Arthur Hodgson and Mr Michael Markham, was designed to operate as an independent, non-partisan Bermuda charity with a strong emphasis on education. One of the goals of the Foundation was to establish an endowment fund to offer financial assistance to Bermudians pursuing graduate degrees by providing educational and research grants.

Current

“In 2020, the Foundation of Bermuda Studies re-emerged under the directorship of Ms Lauren Bell, Mr Dennis Lister lll J.P., MP and Mr Arthur Hodgson. Working with the former Protector of the Spice Valley/T.N. Tatem Middle School Trust Scholarship and the Minister of Education, the Hon. Diallo Rabain, JP MP, the process to locate and verify all the scholarship recipients commenced in 2020 to facilitate the distribution of the Spice Valley/T.N. Tatem Middle School Trust Scholarship funds to recipients.

“The Foundation of Bermuda Studies continues to actively pursue educational endeavours that enhance Bermuda’s resources and her people and is open to all who are interested in offering their assistance in moving them forward to reach their goals.
