Tennis: Bermuda Team Promoted After Wins
Bermuda took on Cuba in a promotion battle as the Davis Cup by Ratuken Group 4 Competition qualification leg came to an end at the National Racquet Center in Trinidad, making a successful showing to earn a promotion.
The Bermuda team of Gavin Manders, James Finnigan, Trey Mallory, and Tariq Simons took to the court looking to advance.
Mallory got Bermuda off to a good start defeating Osmel Rivera Granja in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Simons doubled the lead and claimed the win when he defeated Osviel Turino in straight sets 7-6, 6-0.
Manders and Finnigan did not have to take to the court as Bermuda were promoted to Davis Cup Americas Group Three.
Bermuda Coach Ricky Mallory said, “Words can’t explain the feeling that I have for my players this past week. We were placed in what we called the group of death with Haiti, Antigua and Honduras and came out as Group A winners.
“Moving into the playoffs we were matched up against Cuba who we have never defeated before so to come up with two spectacular wins in singles from Trey and Tariq to win the tie is one of the best outcomes a coach can receive.
“Overall it’s been a total team effort from not only the players but the support team and contingent who traveled to witness this historic moment for Bermuda Tennis.”
Congratulations to you all for the team effort. We are bigger than our challenges. Job well done.
