Charles Marshall, the island’s most decorated referee and former Bermuda Football Association president, has died. He was in his eighties.

A statement by the BFA read: “Bermuda has lost a true son of the soil and a statesman.

“The Bermuda Football Association sends condolences to the family and friends of Mr Charles E Marshall, MBE, former president of the BFA.

“Our logo on social media will change as a mark of respect and remembrance during a period of mourning. Rest well, Mr Marshall.”

Affectionately known as Charlie, Mr Marshall is Bermuda’s longest-serving Fifa-listed referee and was awarded an MBE in 1992 for services to sports.

In 2018, Mr Marshall set up a $1 million fund to help young Bermudian footballers reach their potential and grow the game on the island.

Mr Marshall, the founding member of the Bermuda Referees’ Association, was inducted into the Bermuda Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 and awarded the BFA Order of Merit in 2017.
