Lambe Feeling Confident Ahead Of Title Fight
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Andre Lambe is in a confident mood ahead of his regional title fight against Canadian Paul Ispas at The Shed in Dockyard next Saturday [October 22].
Lambe, aiming for a sixth successive win in the professional ranks, is challenging fellow southpaw Ispas for the vacant American Boxing Federation regional welterweight title.
Ispas, 32, has a record of 4-1-3, including a pair of draws against compatriot Cody Kelly, who takes on Bermudian Nikki Bascome in the main event of Fight Night Champion.
Lambe will step up from four to six rounds and has sparred exclusively with Bascome to prepare for the biggest fight of his fledgling career.
“My approach for this fight hasn’t changed at all,” Lambe told Bernews. “I’ve long been preparing for more rounds, and it was just a case of getting the fights in so I’d be ready to step up [to six rounds].
“It’s been a tremendous camp. I’ve got some great sparring with Nikki [at the NB Boxing Gym in Warwick]. I’m ready to do the rounds.”
The 27-year-old said he has not poured over video footage of Ispas, preferring to study his strengths and weaknesses after the opening bell.
“If I’m fighting a smart fighter, as opposed to someone with just brute force, I might need a little more time to figure him out,” said Lambe, who enjoyed a stoppage win in his previous outing against Jamaican Dwayne Lawrence in June.
“So far, I’ve been pretty good at figuring guys out, and I know I can keep the intensity I bring throughout six rounds.
“I’ve seen bits of his [Ispas] most recent fight, but I let my coach [Pelon Andrade] do all that. I like to keep an open mind. I don’t like preparing for what I’ve seen online; I prefer to wait and see what I find on the night. I know I can adjust if needed.”
Welterweight Bascome [10-1-0] will also face a southpaw in 34-year-old Kelly, whose record is 4-3-3.
Kelly has fought Bascome’s previous opponent Dylan Rushton twice, winning by a unanimous decision in February and drawing against his fellow countryman in January 2019.
Meanwhile, Bermudian Michael Parsons meets Jamaican Gregory Miller in a super-welterweight contest.
