The Rubber Tree Market in Warwick has undergone a revamp with its grand opening, featuring food, fun and entertainment, taking place on Saturday.

Up to 20 vendors are expected to sell products such as jewellery, fruits and vegetables, snacks and Bermuda-made or inspired goods at the Warwick Post Office parking lot from 11 am to 6 pm.

The event will also feature a DJ, a fun castle and a raffle draw for prizes.

For the first time, the market has a restroom while artwork by local artist Angela Ming-Bean, in keeping with the site’s past as a slave burial site, decorates the repurposed container.

The improvements to the market come after investment from the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation (BEDC).

Ondreyah Rochester, the BEDC junior micro small and medium-size enterprise officer, told Bernews: “The Rubber Tree never closed, it just lacked the proper advertising and infrastructure to draw people to the space.

“With the assistance that BEDC has provided to the market, it can attract people to think of the market as a place to visit on Saturdays.”

Ms Rochester said the market, operated by Velarie Outerbridge and Lynel Furbert, plays a vital role in the local community.

“Vendors, or micro-sized enterprises, are an integral part of the local community and vendor markets such as the Rubber Tree can provide a pathway for budding entrepreneurs to test their products and organically grow their business before being committed to a storefront location.”
