Football: Peter Silvester Saves Three Penalties

October 31, 2022

Bermudian goalkeeper Peter Silvester had an outstanding showing for his college team, saving three penalties to propel his Connecticut College team into the NESCAC Semi-Finals.

The school’s match report said, “Sophomore goalkeeper Peter Silvester [Smiths Parish, Bermuda] stopped three penalty kicks to propel the Connecticut College men’s soccer team past top-seeded and sixth-ranked Bowdoin and into the NESCAC semifinals.

“After playing to a 1-1 tie through regulation and two overtime periods, the contest was decided by the penalty kick format. Steve Yeonas [McLean, Va.], Augie Djerdjaj [Mahopac, N.Y.], and Jack Marvel [Marion, Mass.] converted each of their kicks to give the Camels the victory.

“Yeonas took the first kick for the Camels and buried it right down the middle, past Bowdoin keeper, Michael Webber who dove to his right. Polar Bears senior Dylan Reid stepped up next and drilled the lone conversion for Bowdoin. After Djerdjaj made his attempt, Silvester made his first save by diving low and to his left to stop a shot from Harry Cooper.

“After an attempt from Jake Creus [Rye, N.Y.] was blocked by Webber, Silvester responded by rejecting another shot in the same fashion as before, holding the Polar Bears to only one tally. Marvel then stepped up for Conn and put his attempt into the back of the net.

“Down 3-1, Bowdoin needed to score to keep their hopes alive. Carlton Steinberg kicked it low and toward the middle of the net, but Silvester used his foot to bat away the shot as his teammates rushed the field to celebrate.

“With the victory, Connecticut College [7-5-4] advances to the NESCAC semifinals for the second consecutive year. The Camels will travel to second-seeded Williams on November 5 at 11 a.m. with a berth in the conference finals on the line.”
