International Day Of The Girl Event On Sunday

November 17, 2022

To mark the U.N. International Day of the Girl on its 10th anniversary, there will be a free public event on Sunday [Nov 20] at the Bermuda National Sports Centre north field.

A spokesperson said, “After a two year Covid hiatus, organizers Carolyn Thomas Ray and Chris Ray are putting the event on again. The event is for girls only although dads, godfathers, etc are welcome to bring the girls in their lives. The purpose of the event is to introduce girls to activities and sports that they may not have done before while also learning about challenges facing girls here and around the globe.

“Activities will include robotics, boxing, rugby, chess, kickboxing, fencing, football, cricket, Bubbles and Builders, art, childhood development, and lots more.”

Carolyn Thomas Ray said, “We’re pleased to be able to put this event on again after a 2 year break. Many girls and families enjoy the afternoon and love to try new activities. Although girls globally have made great strides, Covid has put back many education goals and we have seen an increase in gender-based abuse and violence here in Bermuda. It’s important for community events to show support for girls and some of the unique challenges they face.”

The spokesperson said, “The U.N. International Day of the Girl was created by UNICEF in 2012 to highlight the struggles girls face globally. According to UNICEF, ‘investments in girls’ rights remain limited and girls continue to confront a myriad of challenges to fulfilling their potential; made worse by concurrent crises of climate change, Covid-19 and humanitarian conflict. Girls around the world continue to face unprecedented challenges to their education, their physical and mental wellness, and the protections needed for a life without violence.’
