Premier: Gasoline Prices Fall In January
“Today I am pleased to report that the price at the pump for gasoline has fallen 5.2 cents from the price cap put in place in February 2022,” announced Premier and Minister of Finance David Burt.
Premier Burt continued, “As a result of Russia’s war in Ukraine, consumers worldwide faced record-high gas prices; however, the same cannot be said for Bermuda. This Government’s commitment to providing ‘Relief Now and More Relief to Come’ was demonstrated by freezing local fuel prices at February 2022 levels. If we did not take this action, on average, Bermuda’s families would have paid $25 more each time they refilled their cars over the summer.
“Since October 2022, market prices have trended downward in each of the three categories (gas, diesel and kerosene), and while we haven’t seen the decrease in the costs of diesel and kerosene drop below February 2022 levels, the average Bermudian is most impacted by the price of gasoline. This decrease means savings at the pump for all of Bermuda’s families and businesses. Motorists who rely on gasoline to move between home and work or to take children to school or relatives to appointments will benefit from this reduction.”
Premier Burt concluded, “As part of this Government’s ongoing commitment to providing as much relief as possible for hard-working Bermudian families, we kept our promise to freeze fuel costs. I’m pleased that today I can announce that gasoline prices are no longer frozen at last February’s levels, but those prices are going down.”
A spokesperson added, “The new maximum price of gasoline sold in Bermuda is 228.9 cents a litre, down from the price cap of 234.1 cents per litre from February 2022. This change goes into effect today – January 17th, 2023.”
Gas prices lower by 5.2 pennies. Made up with Burts self-imposed sugar tax! Premiere Burt, please start leading! If you can’t then step aside or follow someone that can. We are done with your OCD style politics. We cant afford for you to put 100% into a project, get people invested in it, get distracted then pass that on to one of your ministers while you move on to something else meanwhile leaving someone else to take the fall for the failure. We are done gambling on you.
So, the recently released October Consumer Price Index (not even a PLP Government spokesperson) tells us that annual basic food sector prices rose 10.3% (https://bernews.com/2023/01/food-prices-drop-0-1-month-month/), but our Premier and Finance Minister comes out to tell us that the price of fuel has fallen 5.2 cents from the price cap put in place in February 2022?
Politics in a nutshell. Trumpet the ‘good’, try and ignore the bad. I don’t think many people are impressed by this announcement when there are various other things that are falling apart (or in the case of the price of goods, continuing to shoot upward).
“or in the case of the price of goods, continuing to shoot upward”
But they are not. Our (Bermuda) inflation rate is under only 3.7%, less than one-half that of the U.S. See https://bernews.com/2023/01/october-consumer-price-index-inflation-3-8/
Should Premier or a minister announce this?
If it’s good news, Premier delivers and basks in the sunshine.
If it’s bad news, he let’s a minister take the heat.
This makes him a Cut-Throat premier. Sounds about right. He is a trickster. Doesn’t fool me.
These Pennies though to him are more important than all the lightbulbs he promised a year ago? What a joke. He must not have have been serious or else he used the lightbulb debacle to distract from other issues.
Some men you absolutely cannot trust, no matter who they are. As has been stated in the past, “ The true measure of a man is the way he exercises the Authority GIVEN to him”. If he is level headed and reasonable, he would gain the respect and love by the masses.
Sorry but the truth hurts.
