Video: Seal ‘Showing Improvement In Condition’
After being rescued from a Bermuda beach a few days ago, the seal continues to recuperate at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo [BAMZ] and he is “showing improvement in condition.”
The Bermuda Zoological Society posted the video below on Instagram and said, “The grey seal pup is continuing to respond to treatment and is showing improvement in condition. We are cautiously optimistic, and he remains in critical but stable condition.
“His appetite has improved, and he is able to navigate his enclosure for short periods. He urinated and passed a small amount of fecal yesterday, which is a good sign, but he has also developed a nasal discharge, which we are investigating.
“The prior night was difficult with him having a reduced appetite, difficulty prehending food, and having difficulty moving his left forelimb – all of these seem to have resolved and are likely related to his exhaustion. Other symptoms also seem to be resolving slowly.
“The Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo thank the public for their interest and concern and apologise if we have not gotten back to you all on your questions.”
A Government spokesperson said, “The Ministry of Home Affairs is pleased to advise that the grey seal pup continues to respond to treatment, and its condition is improving.
“The BAMZ team are cautiously optimistic as the seal remains in critical but stable condition. The seal’s appetite has improved, and he can navigate his enclosure for short periods and natural bodily functions to remove waste are returning, which is a good sign.
“While many of its symptoms are slowly resolving and likely resulting from exhaustion, BAMZ is presently investigating a nasal discharge. Updates will be provided in the coming days, and we thank the public for their interest and concern.”
The last time a seal was found in Bermuda was in 2019, with the seal — eventually named Lou-Seal — spending a month in Bermuda recuperating, leaving via a charter flight to USA, and spending six more weeks in care before being released back into the ocean.
