February 23, 2023

HMC Burnaby Urgent Care & Medical Imaging  announced, pending Bermuda Medical Council and Department of Immigration approvals, the hiring of Dr Mounzer Ghanem, FRCSI, as a Consultant Otolaryngologist, Head and Neck Surgeon.

A spokesperson said, “Dr Ghanem is expected to be the island’s only full-time ear, nose and throat consultant and will fill the void left by the departure of Dr. Bell some time ago.

“Dr Ghanem has over 23 years of experience as an ENT surgeon and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. For the last year, he has been a Consultant ENT Surgeon at Aga Khan Hospital in Kenya. Prior to that, he spent 13.5 years as a Specialist ENT Surgeon for the Almana General Hospitals Group in Saudi Arabia. Before his move to Saudi Arabia, he spent 9 years as a Specialist ENT Surgeon in Syria.

“Dr Ghanem qualified as a Medical Doctor in 1990 following his studies at Tishreen University in Syria. He then obtained a Master’s Degree in ENT, Head and Neck surgery from Damascus University in Syria in 1993. His postgraduate residency training was undertaken at Tygerberg Academic Hospital in South Africa and Mouassat Teaching Hospital in Syria. He recently undertook a Fellowship in Head and Neck Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Stellenbosch University in South Africa.

“Dr Ghanem’s specializes in endoscopic sinus surgeries, snoring treatments, ear and nose surgery, head and neck surgery, head and neck cancer surgery and reconstruction and facial bone fractures and trauma. He is a member of the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery.”

HMC Medical Director Dr JJ Soares says: “I’m delighted to welcome Dr Ghanem here to further complement the services that HMC Burnaby Urgent Care & Medical Imaging already provides. Since the departure of Dr. Bell, Bermuda has certainly struggled not having a full-time ENT specialist for the past year. HMC Burnaby is very pleased to be able to restore this critically needed specialty to Bermuda’s healthcare system. Bermuda has not had a full-time ENT specialist available, which limits the care available to local residents, so I’m sure that many residents will be really pleased to hear of his arrival.”
