‘Retelling Our Stories’ Exhibition On March 17th

February 27, 2023

The Masterworks Museum, in partnership with Solstice, announced an “unprecedented interactive museum experience that unites health and wellbeing with art and creativity.”

A spokesperson said, “Starting March 17th, the exhibition, ‘Retelling Our Stories,’ will invite individuals of all ages and backgrounds to engage in a creative exercise that identifies the various aspects of personal and community identity. Masterworks will be transforming the interior space of the Butterfield Gallery into a giant blank canvas, to which the public is invited to paint, write, and draw their stories and experiences.”

This community art project was derived from the understandings of Dr. Jade Templer, and the Solstice Team’s Collective Narrative Therapy workshop known as The Tree of Life.

Dr. Templer explains, “Storytelling is one of the oldest communication tools and art forms and holds the power to create how we understand our realities. The Tree of Life is a Collective Narrative Therapy based approach which states that we can sometimes become trapped in unhelpful stories we tell of ourselves, or society tells about us. This approach helps us to reclaim, respect, and retell our stories as individuals and as a community. Through images and words, The Tree of Life focuses on strengthening our relationships with our own history, culture, and significant people in our lives. It helps us to focus on our strengths and ambitions for the future.”

Reilly Smith, Art Therapist at Solstice, also shared “By creating our stories of strength through The Tree of Life approach, we often see a positive impact on our self-esteem, confidence, sense of who we are and feelings of empowerment. Through the combination of art therapy and clinical psychology, we hope that you will be inspired to tell your stories through visual and written expression in order to feel both seen and heard in this creative space.”

The spokesperson said, “Museum guests will have the opportunity to join The Tree of Life workshops, led by the Solstice team, but are also encouraged to explore their individual creative liberty by visiting the Museum at any point and engaging in this participatory exhibition.”

Executive Director Risa Hunter notes, “Our goal with Retelling Our Stories is to, as a community, embrace who we are, where we’ve come from and where we hope to go while encouraging conversation and growth. We recognise the critical value of creativity and its ability to shape our identity, personal narratives and frame the way we see ourselves and others. We look forward to seeing the impact this collaboration will have on the artists, viewers, and our broader community.”

The spokesperson said, “Masterworks and Solstice invite individuals to contribute to this unique public art installation, in telling Bermuda’s story of collective strength. The exhibition will open on Friday March 17th, with a special launch event, and will be available to participate, or to view, until Saturday April 15th.

“The Masterworks Museum is open Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm, and admission to the Museum will be by donation for the duration of this project. In addition, we are offering a free family level membership to all first-time members who visit during the Retelling Our Stories exhibition.

“For private workshops, or groups of over 10 people, it is recommended to call the Museum to schedule a time to visit, at 299-4000.”
