Bodhidarma Zenji Ryu Shiai Karate Tournament

The Bermuda Karate Federation sanctioned the 27th Bodhidarma Zenji Ryu Shiai Karate Tournament at Whitney Institute.

A spokesperson said, “This highly-anticipated event brought together students from every karate dojo on the island, showcasing their skills in kata, kobudo, and kumite.

“The tournament was not just a display of martial arts prowess; it also had a significant impact on the community by providing a positive outlet for children and teens.

“Many of the participants in the tournament were young people who had been training in karate for years, developing discipline, focus, and respect for themselves and others. By offering opportunities for healthy competition, the tournament helped to keep kids engaged in positive activities and away from negative influences.

“The tournament was a resounding success and has been running for 27 years thanks to the tireless efforts of Sensei Gladwin Roots Phillips. Sensei Phillips is the Shiai Director and Chief Instructor of the Bodhidarma Zenji Ryu Karate Dojo, and he has worked hard to ensure that this event runs strongly year after year.

“The tournament was organized by Shotocup, a promotional company known for putting on top-quality events. Shotocup’s efforts ensured that the tournament ran smoothly and that the audience was engaged and entertained throughout the competition. The organizers were praised for doing an exceptional job in putting on an A-class event.

“The tournament featured several impressive performances, with participants displaying their martial arts skills to a high standard. The standout winners were Tony Cabral, who won the advanced male kumite division with incredible style, Khawai Mendoza, who claimed victory in the under 15 male kata division with an outstanding performance, and brothers Noah and Zion Lowe, who swept the under 10 male novice kata division. It was Zion’s first time ever competing, and his brother Noah helped him to victory.

“The day’s overall champion and recipient of the Shiai cup was Geraldine Sidders of Shorikan. Sidders displayed exceptional technique and skill throughout the tournament, impressing judges and spectators alike. After her victory, Sidders stated that she hoped to inspire more young athletes to compete in karate.

“The 27th Bodhidarma Zenji Ryu Shiai Karate Tournament was a testament to the hard work and dedication of Sensei Phillips, Shotocup, and the Bermuda Karate Federation. The Federation expressed its appreciation for the support of all the dojos, participants, and sponsors that made this event possible. The Federation also encouraged all aspiring karate athletes to train hard and participate in upcoming events.

“The next event will be the 2023 Leperq Memorial, which will be held on June 25th, 2023.
