Centennial Announces Success Coach Program
Centennial Bermuda Foundation announced its new Success Coach programme “with a view to supporting first-year students in their transition to post-secondary education.”
A spokesperson said, “The programme is designed to help increase the post-secondary education completion rate for students receiving a Centennial scholarship. Support will focus largely on those first time students receiving Centennial’s scholarships for non-traditional and traditional degree programme.
“According to recent studies, first-generation students are nearly four times more likely to leave higher education after the first year than other students, due to a lack of engagement and belonging on campus.
“As part of the programme, Success Coaches will serve as mentors to first-year Centennial scholarship recipients, offering guidance and leadership to support a student’s success throughout the academic school year.”
Centennial Programme & Operations Coordinator, Terré Smith said, “Having a mentor will be invaluable for first-year students, especially those who are the first generation in their family to attend college or university, because they face unique challenges. They are less likely to seek out resources and support on campus in times of need.”
The spokesperson said, “Centennial is inviting interested individuals with post-secondary qualifications and work experience to apply to become a Success Coach. The selected mentors will participate in professional development and coaching throughout the year, and will build skills in mentoring, advising, leadership, communication, and community-building. These transferrable leadership skills can be applied to future success in their paths, enhancing their professional resume.”
Ms Smith said, “The Centennial Success Coaches Program is an excellent opportunity for individuals to make a difference in the lives of Centennial scholarship recipients. We are recruiting up to 20 Success Coaches and would like to hear from anyone wanting to share their experience and become a mentor. We’d especially like to hear from previous Centennial scholarship reccipients but that said, this opportunity is open to all, if you are interested and meet the criteria please consider applying.”
