911 & Govt Numbers Affected By BTC Outage

[Updated] Due to the current Digicel-BTC outage which has affected landlines an “interruption of phone service is being experienced in many areas across Government,” including with the 911 emergency number, the Government advised today [March 6].

A Government spokesperson said, “Due to the current island-wide Digicel-BTC outage, which has affected numerous landlines across island, an interruption of phone service is being experienced in many areas across Government. This includes emergency numbers, as well as the Government’s main switchboard.

“Currently the 9-11 and 2-11 emergency numbers are inoperable. As such, the public should call:

  • 525-3473 for Fire & Ambulance Emergencies.
  • 296-7559 for non-emergencies.

“A Government spokesperson advised that efforts to restore the emergency lines are underway, and as updates become available, they will be shared with the public.”

Update 3.15pm: A police spokesperson said, “Due to the ongoing service provider outage affecting emergency phone services, 911 and 211, please be advised that the following mobile lines are now available and can be used to contact police.

  • 515-1623
  • 515-1624
  • 515-1625″

Update 5.41pm: A Government spokesperson said, “The public is advised that emergency phone lines have been restored.”

Bernews has asked Digicel for comment and will update if able.

Update: A Digicel spokesperson said, “At approximately 11:55am Digicel engineers noticed alarms indicating a copper landline issue and the team worked non-stop to have the matter resolved in the shortest time possible. Services were restored a few hours later by 3:20pm. Digicel apologises for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

    This is what happens when companies have a monopoly. There has never been another landline hence people are held, hostage. Not everyone has a cell and 911 service needs better.

      Why didn’t you buy Northrock communications when you could have and offer Bermuda an alternative?
