Music Review: BMDS Night Of Cabaret
[Written by Dale Butler]
The Bermuda Musical & Dramatic Society [BMDS] on Friday and Saturday March 10th and 11th, 2023 let the adrenaline flow when it highlighted a host of Bermuda music teachers during a night of Cabaret. After a stressful week of local and international news Katie Ross, the MC, relaxed the audience with her jokes, and had a knack for saying the right thing at the right time. Easily one of the best we have in the island, and a music teacher as well.
It was truly a delightful evening to have had, in front of us, the teachers who had initiated, renewed or boosted many local careers. They were totally relaxed and unpretentious in giving us a first-class night of wonderful music. The evening consisted of the following selections—both popular and rare:
- Lisa Maule [clarinet], Andrea Hodson [piano]
- Canzonetta Pierne
- Alison Johnstone [cello]
- Prelude from Suite No.1 Johann Sebastian Bach
- Sophia Sontag [flute], Andrea Hodson [piano]
- Siciliano Johann Sebastian Bach
- Francois-Joseph Gossec [tambourin]
- Kent Hayward [French horn], Andrea Hodson [piano]
- Nina Giovanni Battista Pergolesi
- Allegro Spiritoso Jean Baptiste Senaille
- Alison Black [violin], Andrea Hodson [piano]
- Meditation from Thais Massenet
- Por una Cabeza by Carlos Gardel [Tango from the movie ‘Scent of a Woman’]
- Sophia Sontag [flute], Nancy Smith [flute], Alison Johnstone [cello]
- The London Trios Joseph Haydn
- Allegro
- Finale
- Kent Hayward [trumpet], Andrea Hodson [piano]
- A Trumpeter’s Lullaby by Leroy Anderson
- Duo Latino – Johanna Pino Gonzalez [viola & vocals], Steve Crawford [guitar]
- Sambossa Celso Machado
- All of Me by Gerald Marks & Seymour Simons
- Quizás by Osvaldo Farrés
The audience left very satisfied. With such an extensive group of well-qualified music teachers in Bermuda, as a whole, we are extremely fortunate to be able to hear this busy group of people who sacrificed their time to perform. The BMDS Charitable Trust is the beneficiary who will use the funds for scholarships and grants, etc.
With a substantial schedule of activities on the horizon, I suggest you consider joining or, at the least, attending some of the highly polished events they deliver on a regular basis. They barely take a breath. With Famous for 15 Minutes on the horizon [April 13-15, 19-22] you need to mark your calendar because local playwrights are extremely talented and you won’t be disappointed.
