The Sri Lankan Association of Bermuda [SLAB] was formed Nov. 11, 2022 as they sought information from each other as the world watched the political catastrophe and serious economic collapse in the country. In short order, they used their network to develop a constitution and elect officers.

After discussion, the members decided that the Association would be non-political, non-religious, and an independent organisation formed to build a network among Sri Lankans residing in Bermuda for the purpose of assisting members where possible in the improvement of their social and cultural experiences through member events and activities. They also want to keep-up -to-date with Bermudian culture, laws and customs. Those in attendance at the first meeting ratified the Constitution and chose officers for the year and a programme.

The new President and Office Bearers challenged the group to do its best to stay in touch with the homeland, and in Bermuda use some free time for a worthy community service, to help Bermuda in areas requiring volunteers.

After a well attended Christmas party with their nationals and many locals as well, the group decided it was time to do some community service. In January, a few members upon seeing the start of the work at the fort, were very impressed with the work started and asked how they could help with the restoration.

On Sunday March 5th, in collaboration with the St. George’s Foundation, they will start at 9 a.m. to clean Fort Victoria built in 1842 [St. Regis Property]. According to Peter Barret, president of the St. George’s Foundation, stated that “the fort was large enough to boast citadel status, meaning that if a military force threatened the island it could be used to house the residents of St. George.”

So far the SLSB have 50 members and friends willing to help with this key environmental and historical revival of the fort and would welcome anyone who is available to attend. Anyone interested in this venture can contact Sudath Ariyawansa at 599-6517; Niroshan Fernando [7047232] or email: slabermuda@gmail.com.
