$14 Million In Cannabis Seized, 9 People Arrested
The police “intercepted two vehicles in which persons who had just left the Executive Jet Facility” at the airport were travelling; found cannabis the police said has an “estimated street value of over $14 million” and the seizure was part of an operation which “resulted in the arrest of nine suspects, one of whom is a Senior Customs Officer.”
A police spokesperson said, “On Wednesday 19th April 2023, the Bermuda Police Service [BPS], Drugs Unit, assisted by the Financial Crime Unit, Criminal Investigation Unit and the Tactical Division, intercepted two vehicles, in which persons who had just left the Executive Jet Facility at the L.F. Wade International Airport were travelling.
“A subsequent search of the individuals and their luggage, led to the recovery of a significant quantity of the controlled drug, cannabis.
“The drugs seized carry an estimated street value of over $14 million BDA.
“The seizure was part of an operation dubbed, “Operation FURUD” and also resulted in the arrest of nine suspects, one of whom is a Senior Customs Officer. As part of the operation, warrants were executed at a number of residences in Pembroke, Hamilton parish, Warwick and Southampton.”
Acting Detective Superintendent, Sherwin Joseph, the officer in charge of Crime Division stated: “This seizure, has led to the dismantling of a major drug trafficking ring and left Bermuda a much safer place. The BPS is well aware that efforts such as this, aimed at trafficking drugs into the island, often involve the illegal importation of firearms and other contraband. We will continue to work with our partners at our ports of entry, to strengthen existing security controls, and protect our community.”
The police added, “No further information will be provided at this time. The BPS Drugs Unit continues investigations into this incident.”

I don’t know about the rest of Bermuda, but I know how much safer I feel knowing this harmless plant is off our streets. Now let me go buy some legal cigarettes or maybe even an unlimited amount of alcohol instead, because we all know they are a much safer alternatives.
All of this is a good thing but the reality see how safe you feel with no drugs on the streets. Trust me it will be worst without them sad to say
But it is just weed? I thought it isn’t addictive? Why would we be less safe without the drug being available? Unless of course you are admitting what many people know…todays marijuana is anything but natural. It is addictive and does alter one’s mind and personality.
But hey, regardless of what side of the fence you are on when it comes to weed, many people celebrated when wonderboy Burt was voted in once again. He and his 30+ team was gonna legalize it which would lessen the need for persons to do this. Now we got nine more going to jail while he goes on to chase another crypto dream. Westgate gotta expand.
You all had enough yet? Nah, like partying sheep listening to Calypso – singing follow the leader leader leader….follow the leader . Then Oh wait? Whats that a cllliiiiiiiiiiiiffff . BYE BERMUDA!
Proud NOT to have voted for the PLP this time.
You make a good point however can you reconcile the violence associated with trafficking and street sales. Not so harmless really.
It’s going to be interesting to see the names when (if?) they come out .
A lot of people one would never think of are traveling by private jet nowadays . Gotta impress and keep up with the Joneses .
Don’t worry Bermuda they will sweep it all under the carpet. Next………
Reads like someone ratted them out.
I can guarantee you, there’s FAR more violence associated with alcohol on this island then there will ever be for cannabis. But then again, we know which people profit from the cigarette and alcohol industries don’t we? You also remove the crime element from Cannabis by legalizing it, then it can be a revenue stream by taxing it, so that everyone benefits, and not just a few families.
No slaps on the wrists, no bail. Have probably gotten away with it for years.
What comes in goes out in other means.
You all jest
What ever happened to the last folks of interest at the executive airport. I recall them being arrested. Never a trial.
True about that… rings/actions..better than Lawyers.
