Items Seized And Five Suspects Arrested

Police executed four search warrants and “packages containing the suspected controlled drug cannabis, along with approximately $10,000.00 BDA and U.S. currency” were seized, “jewellery believed to be acquired from the proceeds of crime” was also seized, three dogs were removed from one property, and “five persons have been arrested.”

The police said, “On Monday, October 3rd, 2022, The Bermuda Police Service [BPS], Drugs Unit, assisted by the Criminal Investigation Unit, Financial Crime Unit and Tactical Division, executed 4 search warrants at four residences located in Hamilton and Southampton Parishes.

“A fishing vessel was included in the searches.

“Packages containing the suspected controlled drug cannabis, along with approximately $10,000.00 BDA and U.S. currency were seized.

“A quantity of jewellery believed to be acquired from the proceeds of crime were also seized.

“Police assisted by Animal Wardens, also removed three illegal dogs from one of the properties that were searched.

“Five persons have been arrested in relation to this operation on suspicion of conspiracy to import controlled drugs, firearms and ammunition into Bermuda, as well as money laundering offences, under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Detective Chief Inspector, Sherwin Joseph, of the Specialists Investigations Department stated: “This investigation stemmed from the discovery of a number of packages, which washed up on our shores in October, 2020 and which were later found to contain controlled drugs”.

Mr. Joseph continued: “This method of illegal importation is particularly dangerous, as it is designed to circumvent all security controls and capable guardians at our borders.”

“The investigation into this matter, which is being led by the BPS Drug Unit, is at a critical stage, therefore no further information will be provided as this time.“
