Events Scheduled To Mark King’s Coronation
There will be a public holiday on Monday, May 8th in recognition of the Coronation of King Charles III and “to highlight the occasion, there are a series of events taking place starting on May 6th.”
A Government spokesperson said, “The public is reminded that on May 8, 2023, there is a public holiday in recognition of the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty the Queen Consort.
“To highlight the occasion, there are a series of events taking place starting on May 6, Coronation Day. Please see the attached e-flyer with the full line up of events.
“On the actual holiday, the Government is partnering with the Bermuda Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., in support of the Royal Edition of the Children’s Reading Festival.
“As a note, Coronation Weekend will include the following observances:
Saturday, 6th May 2023 [Coronation Day]
- Commemorative Tree planting
- Opening of The Coronation Garden [Botanical Gardens]
Sunday, 7th May 2023
- 3.00 p.m. ~ Service of Thanksgiving at The Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity.
Monday, 8th May 2023 [Public Holiday]
- Children’s Reading Festival Royal Edition – Sponsored by the Ministry of Youth, Culture & Sport in partnership with the Bermuda Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and the Department of Libraries & Archives
“The establishment of the Coronation Garden reflects His Majesty’s work in support of the environment and sustainable farming, and the planned Children’s Reading Festival recognizes Her Majesty the Queen Consort’s commitment to literacy, particularly for young people.”
The Royal Edition of the Annual Children’s Reading Festival
A spokesperson said, “On Monday, May 8, 2023, The Bermuda Alumnae Chapter [BAC] of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, with the Government of Bermuda, will host The Royal Edition of the Annual Children’s Reading Festival [CRF], in recognition of The Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III & Her Majesty the Queen Consort. This free event will be held at Victoria Park in Hamilton, between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
“The Children’s Reading Festival is a community event designed to promote a love of reading in our children. A love of reading can be the nexus between strong literacy and communication skills and a sound education. Every child in attendance [from birth to age 14] will receive a free book. There will be resources for parents to explore how to support their young readers and opportunities for creative play and exploration to stimulate and challenge in a fun-filled venue.
“As this is the Royal Edition of CRF, we will have tiaras and crowns for our young attendees and an opportunity to take pictures on a fancy throne. There will also be fun castles, and face painters, a creative arts station, and the Bermuda National Library’s Youth Services on hand. Each child will receive free popcorn and water, and there will be food vendors available on-site.
“Along with the excitement of being able to choose a book, the reader’s pavilion will feature a selection of Bermudian authors and community leaders reading their favourite children’s stories, including the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, the Hon. Owen Darrell, JP, The Minister of Social Development and Seniors, The Hon. Tinee Furbert JP, MP, lawyer Ariana Caines, author Fiona Elkinson, and Sergio Pitcher from Planet Math.”

“The Children’s Reading Festival is always a highlight for our community and our youth. And hosting this event against the backdrop of this global occasion, is the perfect way to raise awareness about the importance of literacy and reading. We in the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport’s wholeheartedly supports the community works that the Bermuda Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated engage in each year. They have made such a positive and lasting impact on the lives of so many. And we couldn’t think of a better way to spend a holiday than by supporting one of Bermuda’s leading charitable organistions and our young people. So, we encourage everyone to attend the Royal Edition of CRF, as it promises to be an exciting occasion for all.”
