Nikki Bascome believes he fought a “great fight” after winning an enthralling rematch with Filipino Alvin Lagumbay at The Shed in Dockyard last night [May 27].

The 32-year-old dominated much of the eight-round welterweight contest, winning by unanimous decision to improve his professional record to 12 victories from 13 bouts.

Bascome said southpaw Lagumbay [14-7-1] felt far more powerful than when they met at super lightweight at the Victualling Yard in Dockyard in June 2019, which the Bermudian also won by unanimous decision.

“It’s a good feeling to beat him again,” Bascome told Bernews. “It gave me an adrenaline rush; I hardly slept last night!

“I stuck to the game plan and adapted quickly. I was watching out for his left hand and countering it.

“He did catch me with a left hand and right hook combination in one round and stunned me; however, other than that, I fought a great fight.

“Mostly, I felt in control, but he was throwing some hard shots, and I had to stay cautious. He was a different fighter than the man I previously fought. He was a lot stronger.”

Although Bascome believes Lagumbay possibly had the upper hand in at least two rounds, he said he felt he landed the more eye-catching punches throughout the entertaining bout.

“Once I was boxing and getting off first, I was landing the cleaner shots,” Bascome said.

“When we did mix it up, I was getting the best of the exchanges. I was using my movement and not staying stationary.”

Bascome said he is open to fighting once more this year before getting married in November.

“I’m going to be focusing on my wedding, but if I can squeeze in one more, then perfect,” he added.

We will have additional reports on other matches later today.
