Photos: New Mural On Community Centre Wall

May 3, 2023

Last week, the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport Owen Darrell joined Mosaic Insurance and local artists to paint a vibrant mural on the exterior wall of the Sammy Wilson Central Zone Community Centre [SWCZCC].

A Government spokesperson said,  “The outdoor creative project served several purposes; it helped to add vibrancy to the SWCZCC following a recent period of refurbishment; it’s in keeping with the “Public Art on Government Buildings” project; and it provided a way for the Mosaic Insurance team to give back to the community. The painting was designed by Carlos Santana Dill-Trott, and it depicts a reimagined flowerbed mural.”

Minister Darrell said, “It’s always a pleasure when we get to work with local organisations and businesses who want to give back in a lasting and impactful way. Last week, Mosaic Insurance staff and our team from the Department of Youth, Sport & Recreation participated in a joint community give-back project.

“I want to thank all those involved for working to make this a reality, particularly the Mosaic staff for their commitment. Special thanks to the vision of our local artist, Carlos Santana Dill-Trott who created this unique feature that we know will heighten the community’s awareness of SWCZCC. We believe this will help in our efforts to reconnect and rejuvenate this area of Hamilton.”

Minister Darrell added, “We are excited to welcome back our young people and our community centre facilitators following the lengthy closure of the SWCZCC. This mural is such a great way to greet them, and we hope it inspires our young people to unleash their creative passions. We are very keen to support all our Bermudian talent. This Government remains committed to ensuring that our local artists are provided with public platforms to showcase their works.”

A spokesperson added, “The community will recall that the “Public Art in Government Buildings” project was introduced as a 2018 Throne Speech initiative. Since then, through the Department of Culture, several unveilings have been facilitated, including creative pieces being installed in the Dame Lois Brown Evans, General Post Office, and Government Administration buildings.

“This latest project, supported by the Department of Youth, Sport & Recreation, is another important way to highlight the work of Bermuda’s creatives. The public is encouraged to visit the area, located on Angle Street, to see the finished product.”
