St George’s Provides $100K In Community Grants
The Corporation of St. George’s announced that the St. George’s Foundation, Friends of St. Peter’s Church, the Salvation Army, and the St. George’s Crown were awarded grants totaling $100,000.
A spokesperson said, “The Corporation of St. George’s is pleased to announce its strong commitment to supporting the town’s efforts and recognizing the contributions of community members. We believe that working together is essential to enhancing the town’s appeal to visitors and ensuring its cultural sustainability.”
Mayor George Dowling III said, “The Corporation is sincerely passionate about seeing the town grow and prosper. We understand that it is important that we sufficiently invest in our people and their programmes to make lives better for those that live and work in our historical town.”
Thanks to funding from the UNESCO World Heritage Fund authorised by the Bermuda Government, the Corporation of St. George’s Town Council has agreed to award grants aimed at maintaining, developing, and promoting the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Town of St. George.
Mayor Dowling reiterated the corporation’s commitment by announcing, “To demonstrate our dedication, the Corporation of St. George’s has recently presented checks to four organisations that have made significant contributions and had a positive impact on our community.”
The St. George’s Foundation, Friends of St. Peter’s Church, the Salvation Army, and the St. George’s Crown were all recognised for their “outstanding contributions to the town.”
The spokesperson said, “Mr. Peter Barrett accepted the check on behalf of the St. George’s Foundation, in recognition of their pivotal role in promoting the town’s cultural heritage and enhancing its aesthetic appeal through their substantial work in cleaning the area’s forts. The Foundation was awarded $20,000 to support their continuing efforts at Fort Victoria and Fort Albert.
“St. Peter’s Church, a landmark that attracts visitors to the Town, also received a check. Mr. Henry Hayward, Chairman of Friends of St. Peter’s Church, accepted $40,000 towards the restoration and maintenance of the St. Peter’s Church Clock.
“The Salvation Army, an organization that supports the social well-being of the community, received a $30,000 check presentation for the exterior painting of their building. The presentation was attended by Divisional Commander, Major Robert Kerr and Major Wayne Knight, who is the representative for the St. George’s Corps.
“Finally, the St. George’s Crown was recognized for its efforts to document town life and promoting the history, heritage and culture of the Town. They received an award of $10,000 towards their operations, which Mr. Jarae Thompson, Creative Director, accepted.
“The Corporation of St. George’s remains committed to working with community members to improve the Town and support its cultural heritage. We are proud to recognize these organizations and their contributions to the community.”
It must an election this week! Smh.
Don’t fall for the politricks!
St.George’s needs to create a transport plan for tourists, and have more minibuses, taxis, and ferries to transport tourists around the towne and this is what they do with the money?! makes no sense!
The Town of St. George can “create a transport plan for tourists” all it wants, but it cannot “have more minibuses, taxis, and ferries to transport tourists” without the assistance of the PLP Government.
That would be the same PLP Government that killed the winter yacht business in St. George around 20 years ago and now wants to build a yacht facility at Ordinance Island!
