The Raft-Up event at Shelly Bay on Saturday [June 17] has been cancelled due to the forecasted weather conditions, Carnival in Bermuda announced.

A spokesperson said, “Carnival in Bermuda, the leading organizer of electrifying carnival events, deeply values the safety and well-being of its attendees. It is with a heavy heart that we announce the cancellation of the highly anticipated Raft-Up event at Shelly Bay on Saturday June 17th due to forecasted weather conditions that pose potential risks to public safety.

A look at last year’s Carnival raft-up

“The decision to cancel the Raft-Up event was not taken lightly. The Carnival in Bermuda team has diligently reviewed the risk assessments provided by the Bermuda Weather Service, Bermuda Coast Guard services, Bermuda Police Service, and Parks Department. We have taken their expert advice and considered the safety implications for all participants involved.”

“With the combination of rain, severely high winds, thunder, lightning, a metal barge, and electricity, it is evident that these conditions do not create a safe to proceed with the Raft-Up at Shelly Bay. Our paramount concern is the well-being of our attendees, and we cannot compromise on public safety.

“Understanding the immense significance of the Raft-Up event, both locally and internationally, we share in the disappointment and frustration felt by our team and the carnival enthusiasts. Countless hours of hard work and dedication have been invested to deliver an unparalleled 2023 experience. We empathize with the individuals who have organized personal boats and the charter and party boat operators who were eagerly looking forward to this event. We decided to announce this decision early to help the public to adjust their plans accordingly.

“Carnival in Bermuda is committed to ensuring that all ticket holders receive a full refund for their purchased tickets. Refunds will be issued through the original method of payment, and ticket holders can expect to receive their refunds within 5 business days.”

“Despite the cancellation of the Raft-Up event, Carnival in Bermuda wishes to underscore the unwavering resilience and vibrant spirit of the island. A spokesperson for Carnival in Bermuda, highlights the island’s determination, stating, “Bermuda Day demonstrated our ability to overcome challenges even in unfavourable weather conditions. Rest assured, the J.AM in Jungle [J’ouvert] and Revel De Road events will proceed as planned, come rain, blow or shine.

“Furthermore, we would like to remind the public that local promoters have arranged several remarkable events throughout this holiday weekend, which will proceed. It’s been raining for the past few weeks, people are in need of a positive release. We encourage the public to participate, immerse themselves in the captivating soca music and soca events, and embrace the boundless love and energy they offer.”
