2023 Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards Winners
Fifty-one student-athletes were honored at the 37th annual Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards at the Phoebe Purvis Memorial Hall at Warwick Academy. These awards, honoring the late Denton Hurdle, are used to highlight, recognize and reward some of the finest primary, middle, and senior school student-athletes.
Phoenix Williams from West Pembroke Primary School was the Primary School Girls winner, Williams is head girl, student leader, and house captain at West Pembroke Primary. She is the recipient of the 2023 Principal’s Award, language, science, math, social studies, health, art, performance arts, and Sportsmanship awards. Williams is an active contributor to the boy’s football and cricket teams. She placed first representing Bermuda’s Bermy Bouncers in jump rope at the 2023 Colorado Classic.
The Primary School Boys winner was Jace Postlewaite from Puris Primary, Postlewaite is a student leader and house captain for Purvis House. He is also a co-founder of the Purvis Gombey troop. Postlewaite placed first in the Sir Stanley Burgess Race and Jingle run. He was the BSSF champion boy at the track and field championships winning the 100 meters and long jump and finishing second in the 200 meters. He broke the 800-meter Purvis Primary School record. He led the Purvis football team to the nine-a-side final. He also won the world triathlon Duathlon in both 2021 and 2022
Kelise Wade from Sandys Secondary Middle School won the Middle School Girls award, Wade is a school prefect and house captain of Scott/Cann house. Wade is a two-time winner of the Sinclair Packwood Memorial Jr. Cycling road race. She was also a member of the Dandy Stars team which won the 2023 Under 13 girls Kappa classic. She is a back-to-back champion in the Skyport Magic Mile and won the 2023 Butterfield mile in the middle school division. She has been a national champion in cycling, track and field, cross country, and triathlon.
The Middle School Boys winner was Cameron Adkins from Warwick Academy, Adkins is a student council member, debate team member, and captain of the track and cross country team. He ran the 3000 meters at the 2023 CARIFTA games in the Bahamas. He was victorious in the BSSF cross country championships and won the 1500 meters at the BSSF Track and field championships. He was a member the under-14 national football team which took part in the Caribbean Football Union Challenge series. He won the mile race in the 2023 NY Armory Track meet. He has been on the Principal’s list for his three years in middle school and received first honors in music and 2nd honors in community service.
The Senior School Girls winner was Azari Easton from the Berkeley Institute, Easton is deputy head girl, prefect, and greenhouse vice-captain at the Berkeley Institute and is the student council secretary. She is also a high honors award recipient. She is a member of the under-20 women’s national football team and scored the third goal in a 3-1 over Anguilla in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament. Easton served as team manager for the boy’s JV and Varsity basketball teams.
Kwame Naylor from the Warwick Academy won the Senior School Boys honors, Naylor is head boy at Warwick Academy and captains several of the school sports teams. He has served on the school’s human rights committee, Eco Club committee, student council committee, senior prefect, and homeroom captain. He was part of the Warwick Academy wind ensemble and concert band as an alto saxophone player. He has represented Bermuda at the under-19 Caribbean Rugby Championships. He is currently playing with the Robin Hood Football Club in the premier division and was also named MVP of the under-17 league. The Denton Hurdle Awards are nothing new to Naylor as he won in 2019 at the middle school level. He has also been a recipient of the Principal’s List Academic Award from 2016-2023.
