First Named Storm Of 2023 Hurricane Season

The 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially started on June 1st, and the first named storm of the season has already formed, with forecasters saying Tropical Storm Arlene likely to weaken today and expected to dissipate on Sunday.

The National Hurricane Center said that “at 400 AM CDT [0900 UTC], the center of Tropical Storm Arlene was located near latitude 24.5 North, longitude 85.5 West. Arlene is moving toward the south-southeast near 9 mph [15 km/h], and a gradual turn to the southeast is expected during the next day or so.

“Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph [65 km/h] with higher gusts. Weakening is expected, and Arlene is forecast to become a tropical depression today, and degenerate into a remnant low by late tonight. Arlene is expected to dissipate on Sunday.

“Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles [110 km] from the center.

“The estimated minimum central pressure is 998 mb [29.47 inches].”
