Mobile Passport Control For U.S. Preclearance

June 26, 2023 | 9 Comments

Skyport announced that “the U.S. Customs and Border Protection [CBP] has introduced the Mobile Passport Control [MPC] program available for use at the United States CBP Preclearance facility in the L.F. Wade International Airport.”

A spokesperson said, “MPC is a free and secure mobile application designed to streamline the inspection process for entry into the United States by reducing passport control inspection time and overall wait times, providing a best-in-class traveler experience for eligible users, and reducing congestion in the security area.

“MPC is available to U.S. citizens, U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents [LPR], and Canadian B1/B2 visitors and does not require pre-approval. L.F. Wade International is the latest airport to roll-out the CBP tech innovation, which is operational at 48 CBP Ports of Entry, including 33 U.S. airports, 4 seaports, and 11 Preclearance airports. Bermuda enjoys a strong and enduring relationship with the United States, which has yielded an offshore preclearance facility since 1974.”

Aaron Adderley, President of Skyport, said, “U.S. bound passengers traveling through L.F. Wade International Airport already benefit from the convenience of U.S. Preclearance. The introduction of the Mobile Passport Control app will reduce queue times and help ease the stress of travel for eligible travelers. MPC is the latest IT solution to be offered at L.F. Wade International.

“We are happy to have partners like U.S. CBP who value the deployment of customized IT products for passenger processing. Skyport continues to evaluate the introduction of other programs, technology, and biometric solutions designed to enhance the traveler experience and hopes to make additional such announcements in the future.”

CBP Bermuda Preclearance Supervisor, Marissa Singh, noted, “Our team of dedicated officers are equipped for the Mobile Passport Control deployment, which will reduce our team’s administrative load, allowing officers to focus on their interviews and law enforcement functions. Travelers and their family members can leverage the program on one mobile device, and once they submit their form, can proceed to their own designated queue located in our Preclearance area.

“MPC ultimately provides a more efficient inspection process and shortens overall wait times, benefiting both, the traveling public and our officers. MPC offers another option for eligible travelers and this new initiative represents the implementation of technology in efforts to creating positive change.”

Karen Grissette, U.S. Consul General said, “Our partnership with Bermuda remains steadfast, and we are delighted to introduce this state-of-the-art technology which will streamline the inspection process through the CBP preclearance facility. Our investment in innovation exemplifies our commitment to progress, while enhancing our border security in Bermuda. We proudly acknowledge the invaluable work of our Customs and Border Protection officers for the program’s implementation and offer our thanks for the ongoing support from our partners at Skyport.”

How MPC works:

  • Eligible travelers download the CBP MPC app, from the Apple or Google app stores, and create a profile using biographic information from their passport[s] or LPR card information.
  • Travelers departing through the CBP Pre-Clearance Facility at L.F. Wade International Airport should select their method of travel as Preclearance along with their port of entry as Bermuda L.F. Wade International Airport.
  • Travelers will be able to add up to 12 family members in a single household to submit in one MPC transaction.
  • Travelers will then answer inspection related questions and certify the truthfulness and accuracy of their answers. Applicants can save this information before arriving at the airport.
  • Upon arrival at the CBP Pre-Clearance Facility at L.F. Wade International Airport applicants must capture a photograph for each traveler and submit their transaction.
  • Once a traveler submits their transaction through the app, the traveler will then receive an electronic receipt with an Encrypted Quick Response [QR] code. Travelers will then bring their physical passport and mobile device with their digital QR-coded receipt to a CBP officer to finalize their inspection for entry into the United States.

This seems extremely complicated; it’s not difficult to get into and out of Bermuda. I’m not sure how this would help and it would be more time-consuming to try and figure out how and when to use this.

  2. Don’t get it says:

Seems us Bermudian travelers can’t use it big I read the mpc elagbility line correct ( neither am I a us citizen a lawful resident nor a Canadian b1 or b2 ). I hope I have mis interpreted the requirements

US customs departure at LF Wade is a far superior for travelers, than the lowly Bermuda Immigration arrival

Bermuda immigration arrival is Slow. Long lines. Too many weird questions you don’t know how to precisely answer and then officers are poorly trained.
Nothing is automated. Im supposed to pull up my pink form arrival card QR code while roaming on low battery on my phone in the “no phones” customs hall. Sorry, not QR code, but an email PDF of the form! Ha.

US customs has regularly been smooth. Efficient automated. You almost Don’t even need Global Entry or Mobile passport. The booth officer is just as fast. If you’re in the hall ; they will process you even if it’s time for them to close for the day. So forget that 3hrs prior to departure time. You’re not competing with every other international flight like at high traffic JFK. The privilege of pre clearance. !!

The challenge is if you get stuck behind a few flights all at once. There are peak hours and times of year. But generally it’s good. Well staffed. They know how to look for nefarious actors.

Bermuda Immigration at LF Wade — guilty first , then an eye roll once they can’t find a thing on you.

Mobile passport technology for border clearance is a good thing. Come on Bermuda Immigration – what are your 2023 LF Wade upgrades? —- 12 automated passport scan turnstiles. They have them in Asia.

Bermuda immigration officers will read your passport, scan it, and then ask if you’ve ever visited Bermuda before….completely missing the part that says I was born in Bermuda.
What other mistakes to they make, daily?

“and then ask if you’ve ever visited Bermuda before….completely missing the part that says I was born in Bermuda”

        Really? I’ve never experienced that.
