Oil Tanker Diverts Due To Injured Crew Member

On Saturday [June 24], an oil tanker diverted to Bermuda to disembark a crew member who had “nearly severed his finger.”

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “Saturday the 24th of June, 8:15 am – Bermuda Radio received a call from the master of oil tanker STI Jermyn. The caller informed that they had an injured crewmember onboard who had nearly severed his finger and they intended to divert to Bermuda for medical assistance. Bermuda Radio conference called RCC Norfolk and had their flight surgeon was able to discuss the case and offer medical advice.

“The vessel was 220 nautical miles north of Bermuda and an offshore transfer was planned for the early hours of Sunday morning, King Edward  VII Memorial Hospital [KEMH] were kept updated with the patients symptoms and treatment. The patient was transferred in a stretcher to the Pilot Boat St David at 5:40 on Sunday morning and taken to a waiting ambulance at Ordnance Island for onward transport to KEMH.”
