Bermuda high jumper Sakari Famous will miss the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, in October-November as she continues her recovery from a back injury, and said she is “looking to have a great season next year.”
Famous, who suffered a stress fracture in her lower back in February, has set her sights on returning to competitive action for the indoor season next year.
The 23-year-old, who represented Bermuda at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last summer, was in fine form for McNeese University in Lake Charles, Louisiana, before picking up the injury, winning six straight indoor meets.
“I believe the injury has healed well,” Famous told Bernews. “I’m taking everything slowly, and I’m looking to have a great season next year.
“I’ve no plans to compete this fall. I look forward to preparing for the spring. My focus will be trying to get to indoor and outdoor nationals.”
Famous will continue competing next season for McNeese University, where she will study for her master’s degree.
“I will have my eligibility to compete for my school, probably even the following year,” she added.
“So, with potentially having another season with my school, going pro is not the focus right now.”
