St. George’s Commemorates 411th Anniversary
The Town of St. George said they are “proud to mark a significant milestone on this memorable day, July 12, 2023″ as they “commemorate the 411th anniversary of the momentous event that laid the foundation for our charming Town of St. George. ”
A spokesperson said, “This day, back in 1612, saw the arrival of the first permanent settlers on the shores of St. George’s, signifying a historic turning point in the development of this thriving marine community.
Town of St. George Mayor Quinell Francis, states, “Today, as we commemorate the 411th anniversary of the founding of St. George’s, we stand proud of the remarkable journey that has brought us to this moment. The indomitable spirit of our ancestors, their resilience, and their unwavering dedication have shaped our flourishing community into what it is today.”
A spokesperson said, “The story of Bermuda began in 1609, when Admiral Sir George Somers and his crew of one hundred and fifty men, women, and children discovered these remarkable islands. Seeking refuge after their ship, the Sea Venture, was shipwrecked nearby during a storm, they unknowingly set in motion the transformation of Bermuda’s destiny.
“The Town of St. George, named in honour of Admiral Sir George Somers, embodies the extraordinary accomplishments of a multifaceted man. Somers, an Elizabethan privateer, merchant trader, Member of Parliament, and military leader, laid the groundwork for Bermuda and established it as England’s first Crown Colony. From its humble origins, this island swiftly evolved into a progressive settlement, bearing witness to the resilience, perseverance, and indomitable spirit of its inhabitants throughout the centuries.
“In 1612, the official settlement of the island commenced with a crew of sixty aboard the Plough, accompanied by the island’s first Governor, Sir Richard Moore, arriving on the island. Those on board and three men left to watch over Bermuda began the building of the town. The business of Bermuda faced challenges during the following seven decades as it operated as a business arm of the Virginia Company. Despite their efforts, the company could not find a profitable path and ultimately wound up its operations. However, a turnaround specialist, the Somers Isle Company, took charge, effectively managing the island for 69 years.
“Today, the Town of St. George stands as a flourishing community, proudly recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its rich history, picturesque streets, and welcoming residents captivate visitors from around the world. The Town is a testament to resourcefulness and productivity, traits that have defined this remarkable town throughout its existence.
“On this momentous anniversary, we reflect upon the countless generations of Town of St. George residents who have contributed to the growth and prosperity of our remarkable town. Their unwavering dedication, hard work, and love for the community have preserved the essence of the Town as it was in 1612.”
Mayor Francis concludes, “To celebrate this significant milestone, we cordially invite both residents and visitors to delve into the captivating history of Bermuda, with a particular emphasis on the founding of the Town of St. George.
“As awareness grows, the importance of embracing our history and culture becomes increasingly evident, as does the value of fostering a greater appreciation for our humble beginnings and the sacrifices made by our forefathers. Through their remarkable endeavours, we now enjoy the abundance and opportunities that exist today.”
