Bermuda’s Nahki Wells scored for Bristol City as they played to a 5 – 1 victory over Oxford United.

The club’s match report said, “Jason Knight’s brace helped secure a Carabao Cup Round One victory for City. Knight scored in the 36th and 46th minutes for his first Robins goals with Nahki Wells, Harry Cornick and Kal Naismith – making his first appearance of the season – also getting on the scoresheet.

“Cornick made no mistake in the 15th minute when a Anis Mehmeti and Haydon Roberts link up saw the latter cut the ball back and the No 9 steered the ball home.

“Oxford United soon found themselves level in the 29th minute after a deep cross by Finley Stevens found Bodin at the back post whose looping header found its way into the back of the net.

“The visitors were denied a second after a crucial tackle by Joe Williams and, as the game neared the thirty-five-minute mark, momentum shifted and Anis Mehmeti beat his defender, whose cross found Knight and he finished with intent for his first City Goal.

“Full of confidence Knight was soon denied a second having gone one on one with the U’s keeper James Beadle who came out on top.

“City finished the half the better of the two sides and, in the final few moments, Ciaron Brown prevented a City counter-attack bringing Cornick down and picking up a yellow card for his troubles.

“City came out flying and it didn’t take long to add to their lead. Mehmeti linked up with Roberts – not for the first time – and drilled the ball across the box to find Knight who was making a late run into the box.

“The energised City quickly added to their lead and in the 51st minute the lurking Knight intercepted a sloppy Oxford United pass and slipped in Nahki Wells whose composure took him passed the keeper for an easy fourth goal.

“Oxford United’s first chance off the half came just before the hour-mark after an excellent reverse pass by Tyler Goodrham found Mark Harris only to be denied by an expert piece of defending by Zak Vyner.

“Just after the hour mark substitute Kal Naismith found the back of the net less than five minutes after entering the field of play. Wells whose threat was growing dinked the ball in behind the U’s back line and Naismith cheekily flicked it past the goalkeeper.

“Oxford United struggled to get a foothold in the game but was presented with an opportunity right in front of the City goal but could not capitalise.

“Just after the 70th-minute mark City – who had already made multiple substitutions including Naismth, Sam Bell and Matty James for Knight, Andy King and Joe Williams – replaced Wells with Ephraim Yeboah to make his City debut.

“The Robins showed no signs of tiring and Oxford United struggled to clear their lines with James denied from range twice and Yeboah looking dangerous.

“In the last minute of the 90 Mehmeti’s first time pass from the edge of the box found Mark Sykes steaming forward and his cross caused a scramble in the box.

“George Tanner wanted a piece of the action and his long-range strike in injury-time was comfortably palmed away by Beadle in the Oxford goal.

“City finished the worthy winners to take them into Round Two of the Carabao Cup.”
