Cup Match Holiday Weekend Policing Statistics

August 11, 2023

The Bermuda Police Service [BPS] said they thank the “vast majority of our community for their co-operation over this year’s Cup Match holiday weekend, which saw most residents enjoying themselves responsibly.

A police spokesperson said, “As outlined prior to the long holiday weekend, the BPS conducted high visibility patrols on land and sea. The marine patrols were carried out in partnership with the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coastguard.

“From Thursday, 3rd August until Monday, 7th August 2023 a total of 32 people were arrested, including seven people arrested for possession of a bladed article and two people arrested on suspicion of impaired driving [one of the two suspected impaired drivers was arrested at a road sobriety checkpoint]. One of those individuals later failed the alco-analyser test and is anticipated to appear in court in due course, while the other passed the alco-analyser test and was released.

“On the first day of Cup Match [3rd August] alone, the BPS carried out 42 stop and searches, issued 11 traffic tickets and arrested four people for drug offences and/or outstanding warrants.

“In addition, over the long holiday weekend [3rd – 7th August 2023] 84 tickets were issued to motorists for various traffic offences.

“These statistics highlight only some of the policing effort that took place during the Cup Match 2023 holiday weekend to deter and detect criminal activity and help make Bermuda safer.”
