“For the current reporting period, August 1st, 2023 to August 31st, 2023, a total of 296 Moving Violation Tickets were issued for various traffic offences,” the police said.

A police spokesperson said, “Since Operation Vega was introduced in July of 2021, almost eleven thousand tickets [10,862], have been issued for traffic offences. However Chief Inspector Robert Cardwell of the Tactical Support Unit explains, issuing tickets is not the objective.”

Chief Inspector Robert Cardwell said, “Contrary to criticisms that Operation Vega is meant to generate revenue through issuing tickets, this initiative is geared specifically toward reducing harm on our roads. And while we would much prefer road users comply with the laws governing the operation of a vehicle on the island’s roads, we must continue to do all we can to calm and slow things down with effective enforcement.”

The spokesperson said, “Impaired driving remains a major cause for concern. So far this year, there have been 175 arrests for impaired driving. For the same period last year, the figure stood at 145.
