Karting driver Scott Barnes has become a nine-time winner at the Xtream Rock Island Grand Prix in the United States after claiming two more titles at the weekend.

Barnes won the Open Shifter and Shifter Masters classes at the two-day event in Quad Cities – a metropolitan area on the Mississippi River in Illinois and Iowa.

He also came second in the Ignite Masters 206, third in the Ignite Senior 206 and fifth in the Ignite Senior 2.

“I definitely could have won more rocks [titles], but to leave with two was a great weekend,” Barnes told Bernews.

“I raced seven classes and was in the mix for at least five of them. It’s hard to win at this track.”

The 38-year-old, who debuted at Rock Island in 2001 – the largest and most prestigious street race in North America – was especially pleased with his displays, considering he had not been in a kart since April.

“It’s nice to know that even though I hadn’t been in a kart for so long, I could still run with these guys,” said Barnes, who was racing for Ohio-based Magik Kart USA.

The former Bermuda Karting Club president plans to return to action at the CKNA Grand Nationals in New Castle, Indiana, next month.

“It’s the biggest 206 race in the US,” said Barnes, who is sponsored by Butterfield and Vallis.
