BELCO Provides Final Post Idalia Update

September 4, 2023

BELCO today provided a final update on power restoration efforts following post tropical cyclone Idalia, noting that approximately 75 customers remain without power as of this morning [Sept 4].

A spokesperson said, “Bermuda Electric Light Company Limited [BELCO] today provided a final update on power restoration efforts following post tropical cyclone Idalia.

“BELCO Crews worked until Midnight on Sunday, September 3rd and resumed work this morning to continue restoring power to approximately 75 customers who remained without power.

“Customers who remain without power are now asked to call 955 to report their outage. As restoration efforts continue, some customers may experience temporary outages as crews de-energise circuits to safely effect repairs.”

Managing Director of Transmission, Distribution and Retail [TD&R] Shelly Leman said: “The storm force winds from Idalia, coupled with a significant amount of vegetation coming into contact with our overhead network caused moderate damage to parts of our distribution network. Our crews have worked as quickly and safely as possible to restore power. Let me again thank the public for their patience throughout the restoration process.”

The spokesperson said, “With the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season approaching, BELCO is urging residents to ensure their trees are cut back from power lines should the island be impacted by another storm this season.

“Property owners should keep vegetation on their property trimmed at least 10 feet away from BELCO power lines. BELCO works to ensure that trees are cut back near main line circuits and some branch lines. Should property owners wish to trim their trees, it is critically important to remember that a power line’s electricity must be disconnected before trimming trees next to it. To schedule a temporary outage for tree trimming safety, property owners can call BELCO at 295-5111 or email treetrimming@belco.bm.”

3 out of 10 for the storms last week Belco. A poor effort.
