Evolution Healing On World Physiotherapy Day

September 8, 2023

Today [Sept 8] is World Physiotherapy Day and Evolution Healing Centre is highlighting “the link between arthritis and cardiovascular disease.”

A spokesperson said, “This year’s focus is on arthritis, and Evolution Healing Centre has chosen to highlight the link between arthritis and cardiovascular disease.

“Arthritis is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide, causing pain, stiffness, and inflammation in the joints. Due to these challenges it may limit some people’s ability to perform daily activities. Arthritis is not just a problem for joint health but did you know that confirmation of its presence is associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease [CVD]?

“CVD is a group of conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels, including coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, heart failure, and stroke. People with arthritis are at a higher risk of developing CVD than those without arthritis [Hsu et al., 2017; Myasoedova et al. 2011]. One study found that those with osteoarthritis were three times more likely to have heart failure or ischemic heart disease compared to those without [Hall et al., 2016].

“The link between arthritis and CVD is not fully understood but several factors might contribute to the increased risk such as: chronic inflammation, physical inactivity, and the use of pain medications [such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs].

“The good news is that physiotherapy can help. Physiotherapists are healthcare professionals who specialize in helping people improve their physical function and mobility. They can work with you to develop an exercise program that is tailored to your specific needs and abilities. This can help you maintain physical activity and improve cardiovascular health, reducing your risk of CVD.

“In addition to exercise, physiotherapists can provide education on the importance of a healthy lifestyle, including diet and exercise. They can work with you to develop a plan to manage your pain without relying on medications that can increase your risk of CVD. Physiotherapists can also provide support and guidance as you navigate the challenges of living with arthritis and CVD.

“They can help you understand your condition and develop strategies to manage your symptoms and improve your overall quality of life.

“This World Physiotherapy Day, consider making an appointment with a physiotherapist to learn how they can help you manage your arthritis and improve your cardiovascular health. Remember, small changes can make a big difference in your health and well-being. By working together with your healthcare team, including a physiotherapist, you can take control of your health and live your best life.”
