FAMILY [FAM, I Love You], a new exhibit by Jayde Gibbons, was officially opened by Governor Rena Lalgie at the National Museum of Bermuda, with approximately 150 guests present.

A spokesperson said, “In the exhibit, Gibbons explores the enduring power of family and community bonds in the face of profound sorrow and bereavement in this new exhibit. FAMILY chronicles what Gibbons calls the ‘bittersweet moments’ at five local funerals and celebrations of life for Charles Bascome, Osagi Bascome, Miguel Butterfield, Jan Martin and Charles Thomas.

“Through her composition, framing, artistic and visual storytelling talent, Gibbons takes the viewer on an emotional journey. Her powerful compositions convey the deep human connections and a strong sense of community in the midst of grief and remembrance. The photographs invite contemplation of how people come together in times of loss, celebrate life, and strengthen bonds of connection.”

NMB Curator Dr Deborah Atwood shared: “Jayde’s images hold immense social significance that transcend cultural boundaries, serving as cultural retentions that contribute to identity formation, cultural resilience, and the preservation of heritage, especially within African, Afro-Bermudian, and other African diaspora communities. FAMILY is an important continuation of NMB programming and offers a contemporary perspective on shared human experiences and documents our present-day cultural heritage.”

“FAMILY is Gibbons’ creative response to NMB’s ongoing project, the Bermuda Family Scrapbook, which invites anyone who lives or has lived in Bermuda to submit their historic family photographs and associated personal narratives. The scrapbook will help build a better understanding of the varied experiences of daily life in Bermuda and our Atlantic World connections.

“The submissions are being added to the Museum’s collection, as historic records for future generations, and eventually will become part of an exhibit. NMB is seeking submissions: learn more and submit at nmb.bm/bermuda-family-scrapbook. The scrapbook is part of NMB’s free award-winning community education programme, Tracing Our/Roots/Routes [TORR]: nmb.bm/tracing-our-roots-routes.

“On Sunday, October 15, Gibbons gave an Artist Talk, sponsored by the Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA] as part of their inaugural Art Month. She shared details about her work and creative process for FAMILY.

“She will be having another Artist Talk on Sunday, October 29 at 11:30am in Commissioner’s House at NMB. Artist Talks are free with NMB admission [$18/adults, $15/seniors, children under 16 and NMB members are free].”
