Video: Port Workers Honour Fallen Colleagues

October 11, 2023

Bermuda’s stevedores have united with Caribbean port workers to pay tribute to their fallen colleagues in Antigua and Barbados.

A spokesperson said, “In a solemn display of unity and solidarity, Bermuda’s stevedores today joined port workers across the Caribbean region to pay tribute to their fallen comrades, who tragically lost their lives while performing their duties in Antigua and Barbados.

“The Port Managers Association of the Caribbean, representing the maritime industry in the region, organised a moment of silence to honour the memory of Antiguan Denroy ‘Waka’ Harrigan and Jeffrey ‘Milk’ Broomes of Barbados, two dedicated and hardworking stevedores whose lives were tragically cut short.

“With over 90% of Bermuda’s imports passing through its docks, Stevedoring Services Limited [SSL] understands the crucial role of port workers in sustaining the nation’s economy. SSL is deeply saddened by the recent loss of our colleagues in Antigua and Barbados, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and friends during this difficult time.

“The port managers and associations under the umbrella of the Port Managers Association of the Caribbean [PMAC] recognize the inherent risks and dangers that port workers face daily. These brave men and women work with multi-tonne equipment, cranes, and containers in an environment filled with long-term and immediate risks. Ensuring the safety and well-being of our workers is paramount, and SSL is committed to mitigating any potential issues on our docks.

“In light of these recent incidents, SSL will actively participate in additional health and safety training programmes offered to ports throughout the Caribbean region. Our aim is to improve safety standards, reduce risks, and enhance the well-being of all those who labour tirelessly on our docks.

“While each loss is deeply felt, it also serves as a stark reminder of the importance of continuous vigilance in maintaining a safe working environment for port workers. Decades ago, SSL experienced its own loss of a dockworker, and we are committed to honouring the memory of all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice by ensuring that every worker returns home safely at the end of their shift.

“The port workers of Bermuda and the Caribbean are the backbone of our nations’ economies, and their safety is of paramount importance to us all.

“In unity and remembrance, we stand together to honor the memory of Milk and Broomes and to reaffirm our commitment to the safety and well-being of all port workers in Bermuda and throughout the Caribbean.”
